There's a manual available in adobe reader format at http://static.garmincdn.com/pumac/3130_OwnersManual.pdf There should have been a car charger with the satnav. It has a plug that goes in the cigarette lighter socket of the car on one end and the other end has a mini USB plug that goes in the back of the satnav. Charging with this charger takes about 4 hours though it can be charged while using the satnav. For the first charge you should leave it on until it's fully charged.
There should also be a mini USB lead with the satnav that can be used to connect it to a computer. Connecting it to a computer also charges it though this method takes about 8 hours.
Mains chargers can be bought seperately from shops which sell garmin satnavs.
My condolences. I would suggest you plug the unit in to your computer's USB port using an appropriate data cable (in case you no longer have the Garmin data cable, there are lots of devices, including cameras, that use such a cable with the large USB plug at one end and the mini-USB at the other). That would give you a handle on where the fault lies -- in the auto charger cable itself vs the nuvi's socket. If the nuvi charges from your computer, you're halfway home; if not, I suspect the cost of repairing the nuvi's USB jack could exceed the cost of a replacement unit.
thats because the phone charger is wired different to the gps charger , u need a genuine charger, if when pluged into pc it takes longer to charge, best to have gps turned off while charging from pc..... if it still does not work/ hold charge battery in unit gone , caused by being in active for over 3 months
It sounds like your battery is defective. They can be replaced. The Motorola phone cable is not wired exactly like the Garmin, and your Nuvi thinks it's connected to a PC. Radio Shack carries a charger for the Nuvi. I have one myself.
Let me know if you need additional help with your battery problem.
Sounds like you both have a battery problem. I experienced a similar problem when trying to charge via the USB-cable connected to my computer. Ended up buying an original charger (expensive) and the charging went smooth. The car charger should in any case work fine, so probably your battery is not very healthy.
Try holding your finger on the battery symbol for about 10 sec. The unit will then switch to a technical page. There you can observe the battery and charging voltage. When I plug in my computer USB-cable, I read around 4,4V and that is not sufficient for charging my battery. When connected to the original charger, this voltage rises to about 5V which gives a nice charge. When unplugging charger, the unit displays the battery capacity. If the charging voltage is OK, but battery capacity drops quickly after you unplug charger cable, the battery is probably bad. (Of course you have to charge is for some time) I think around 4V battery voltage give 100% capacity. 3,9V gives about 90% capacity. This will not solve your problem, but can give you an idea about what is wrong. Good luck.
Based on your description, you are doing it right. You said.... "when i connect it to the car charger it shows the computer sysmbol and starts charging. there is no other usb port on the device" That is correct. It takes about 2-3 hours to fully charge a low battery. There is only a mini USB port on a 260. It's used for charging and downloading updates of software or maps.
Vehicle Power Cable to the nüvi and connect the other end to your
computer, your nüvi does not operate as a GPS unit - it goes into some sort of charging mode. However, if
you FIRST turn on the nüvi in the battery mode then go
into the test mode (press the battery icon for about 8-9 seconds) from the main screen, THEN PLUG in the USB cable, and finally exit the test screen, your nüvi will restart (reboot) and it
will operate just like it was plugged into the cradle connection in your vehicle.
This mode will charge the battery AND operate as a GPS.
It works with my computer USB cable, my cell phone charger and my car charger for my cell phone.
Don't forget to turn off the nüvi before unplugging."
