Borrow a friend's computer.
Download "AVG 9.0 Free" from http://Free.AVG.com
Copy the downloaded file to a USB memory-stick.
Connect the memory-stick to your computer.
Install AVG 9.0 from the file(s) on that memory-stick.

Or, download from: http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials
to the USB memory-stick, and then install it.

Mouse pointer drfts to the right side of the screen. I have a touch pad and a mouse button on the keyboard. Even when I connected my usb mouse that pointer drifts as well. I'm not able to control the mouse...

see if your touchpad settings have a setting that controls the sensitivity on the area around the touchpad where you rest your hands on the laptop. I forget what it's called, but most laptops have a setting to control that, so when you rest your hands on the laptop it doesn't affect mouse movement. When you rest your hands, if the sesitivity is too high, the mouse pointer will move when you place your hands to rest on that area.

Mouse works for about 20 seconds during system start up freezes

Remove AVG and see if that corrects the problem.
If it does your issue is with AVG .. try another
antivirus tool.

Pointer locks up on the desk top after a power outage

Tried a different mouse? Maybe the power outage fried it. pc2 mouse? If it the wirring is fried or the mother board for the mouse is fried then you could purchase a USB mouse if you have an available port.  Finally download the mouse driver and reload it first.   Any more questions please ask. Thanks

try booting into safe mode? on a pc hit F8 repeatedly while you boot until you get a boot screen with the safe mode option. Some laptops have differant keys, eg F2, <Del>, F10, but ussualy they state this when it boots up.

when you get into safe mode, go to your run prompt and type "msconfig" hit enter. got to startup, disable all.Go to services, disable all. reboot. if this works, try running an pdated antivirus scan. I recommend using Avast! which is like AVG. It can do a start up scan. also try running something like 'trojan remover' which is free to download.

Good luck! :)

Screen is black. Only mouse pointer shows. Running Microsoft Vista

Have you tried starting in safe mode?
If this works do you have any anti virus software? If you dont, try AVG free (http://free.avg.com/download?prd=afe) Scan for any viruses and remove un-needed programs/files.

Sorry if this doesent work!

LAPTOP VIRUS

depending on the type of "malware" you have the AV software should be able to remove or quarantine it. Do you know the name of the virus/infection? Do you have an expired version of any AV software? If so remove it with manufacturer's "removal tool" before installing any "new" software.
If your laptop doesn't have any AV software or it's expired, I would go purchase PC Tools INternet Security or Webroot Antivirus w/ Antispyware.
Once installed, boot computer into safe mode (tap F8 while starting) and run full scan.

MOUSE IS ACTING CRAZY

It could very well be a bug of some sort. Do you have any antivirus on your system? If not may I suggest Grisoft AVG, they have a free version, but its only antivirus. You can try Search and Destroy for spyware. But I would recommend getting and running Combo Fix first. These are all free softwares, and I hope they help solve your problem
