Question about Briggs & Stratton Automatic Home Standby Generator System 7 Kw /6 Kw

1 Answer

My Briggs and Stratton standby 7000w home generator won't start, either automatically or manually. I changed the spark plug, the oil, oil filter and the air filter. When I hook it up to a car battery it fires right up and stays on after I disconnect it. Yet I try an hour later with out the car battery and it won't do anything. It attempts to turn over for maybe 3 seconds then dies.

Check the battery voltage while cranking the engine if it drops below 9 VDC then you have a bad battery.

sounds more like a fuel problem not oil being spilled on it but check the oil level some have a low oil shut off see if you can keep it running spraying carb cleaner in the air filter that will tell you if it is a fuel problem more so a fuel problem if you left fuel in it for more than 30 days

I have a Briggs and Stratton Elite series5500 watt portable generator. I cannot get it started. It has gas and oil but will not start. What could be the problem

Ensure choke is turned on while starting.
Ensure spark lead is fully pushed onto plug.
Remove spark plug and check there is a spark by keeping spark plug against body of engine and cranking engine, if no spark check there are no broken wires in ignition circuit.
Turn off gas tap if present. Remove the float bowl while holding a container under it to collect any gas. Turn on tap and check the fuel flows freely.
Check the air filter is clean. If it has foam elements these can be washed with warm water and detergent, rinsed and then oiled with a teaspoon of oil evenly distributed through the foam.

It sounds like the mains sense wire is disconected from the control panel or the run wire is not being cut by the aux contact on the transfer switch.
Is the transfer switch manual or motorised?

Briggs and Stratton propane gernerator will not run.

The engine is starved for fuel. Check fuel flow. Possibly a dirty fuel filter someplace in the line or the regulator has low flow.

You can verify this by putting an UNLIGHTED Bernz propane torch into the intake. If that improves it, then low fuel flow is the culprit.

Fuel filters for propane are very fine and can plug up easily. I am not sure where yours are, however I would check at the inout of the regulator for one there for sure.

Hello, I have a Briggs & Stratton 7000 watt generator Home Standby with manual transfer switch, it starts but when you release the switch into run mode it dies, any ideas? Generator has been in service...

These units are equipped with a low/no oil shutdown. When you hold the switch over to start it, it overrides the shutdown interlock until the unit builds oil pressure in the engine. When you release the switch to the run position the interlock is engaged. Ensure there is sufficient oil in the crankcase, check the wiring from the oil pressure switch to the ignition cutout-(it may have been pulled off or damaged). If that checks out, then either jump across the 2 wires at the oil sending unit or disconnect the harness from the sending unit to test to see if the sending unit is bad. Try both unless you know the switch is normally open or normally closed. Replace the sending unit if needed.
