The evaporator coil behind the cover on the back wall inside the freezer will ice up under normal conditions. Every 8 to 10 hours for around 20 minutes the defrost timer (or in most newer models the electronic adaptive defrost control) will turn the defrost heater on to melt the built up ice. There is a defrost thermostat which prevents the heater from overheating the freezer by breaking the heater circuit when the temp reaches close to 32 degrees F. The entire cooling system shuts off during the defrost cycle and starts back when the timer advances through the cycle.

If this ice is not melted it will continue to build up until the air can’t flow over the coil to circulate the cold air through the freezer and into the fridge. The temperature change in the fridge is usually noticed first followed by the freezer.

If the defrost thermostat is bad it can prevent the heater from coming on OR it won’t turn the heater off when it gets too warm. It is clamped to the evaporator coil at the top to sense the temp. If it appears to be misshapen it is bad.
With an ohm meter it should show continuity when cold and none when warm.
You can also bypass the thermostat to see if the heater comes on then. If it does then you know the thermostat is bad and needs replaced.

The defrost heater is located on the evaporator. It is in a tube which is at the bottom and can also go up the sides of the evaporator. On some types you can see a burnt spot if it’s bad. With an ohm meter it should show continuity from end to end when disconnected from the wiring in the freezer. You can also test the wiring for voltage when it’s in the defrost mode.

If you have a defrost timer you can test it. It can be located under the fridge behind the kick panel on the front. Some are in the fridge with the controls at the top. You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer because that means the timer is not running. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

If you have an adaptive defrost control instead of a timer, replace it if the heater and thermostat test good. It is located in the fridge with the controls in some models and on the back in others.

Freezer freezes but frig wont cool amana with freezer on the bottom

I couldn't find a repairman so I pulled the big thing away from the wall, took off the bottom front plate and the bottom rear plate and unplugged the big beast. Then using a refrigerator brush and a vacuum I carefully cleaned all the dustballs from the coils on the bottom. Then plugged it back in and in about 3 hours it was cooling normally again on a "4" setting.

Is there frost on the freezer panel? are the two motor and compressor running (freezer motor and condenser motor)? find this out 1st. this is nothing you did but if you are not mechanically incline at this point only a frig tech can properly check and tell you exactly what is it. theres are the things it might be...
compressor not working
condenser not running
freezer fan not running
thermostat not sensing temp.
stuck in defrost
heaters on too long
bi-metal shorted
timer not working
now if you paid alot for this frig at least get someone to look at it for a service call ($40-60) if it too high to repair then its time to get a new one

Freezer on the bottom

Because there are many models like the model number listed above your post I will need you to confirm the model number on the refrigerator. The photo below shows were to look for the model number. Some like yours have a simple defrost system and some have circuit control boards. Everyone has these problems with every brand, Your model is Amana and also a Maytag brand. Let me know so I can help you get this going thanks, Sea Breeze

IceBoxnot getting cold

sounds like a similar problem I have, but with a top loaded freezer/refrigerator. I took the back panel of the freezer out (carefully so as not to break anything). I discovered ice covering everything; coil, defrost heater, and perhaps a defrost timer (I didn't see one). I suspect (according to what I've been able to find on the internet without having to pay for a response) that the defrost heating element and/or defrost timer are defective. I only use this 4 yr old refrigerator seasonally, so I don't mind having to manually defrost the freezer. I will try to get parts in the states when I return in the fall. This doesn't tell you how to repair the problem in entirety; but it may give you a hint and possible temporary solution. Oh, I used a hair dryer to melt all the ice covering the above noted freezer parts. My refrigerator is working just fine; however, I'm sure that it'll build up with ice once again. I'm leaving in 6 weeks, so I don't care so long as I know that I can remedy the problem for now. The article I read recommended using a volt meter tester; that I'm not familiar, it may very well allow me to determine which part is defective. The heater coil is about $25, I didn't check on the timer. Try this site: http://www.applianceaid.com/defrost_cycle.html . Good luck. Tom
