Question about Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

Virtual Memory Problem

I installed this program for my relative for SAT exams, but once the installation is complete this window pops up saying that I need "at least 3MB of virtual memory space to run this program. But when I right click My Computer> Click on Properties> Go to Advanced Tab & click on Settings under Performance> Click on another Advanced Tab & "change" my Visual Memory. I have a Min. of 1536 (MB) & I'm allowed a Max. of 3072 (MB). But before I mess with this I want to know how much I can lower my Virtual Memory & what the risks are? I'd very much appreciate any solutions you might have.

It is true that you can set your virtual memory settings higher than the Maxium size is allowed? For example: My Max. size is 3072 (MB) & I were to set it 4096 would that be safe or would it put my PC at risk?

Virtual memory is a paging file setup on your hard drive. It reserves a spot on your hard drive to use in place of ram memory. You should be able to safely set it to 4096. You don't want to use too much as your computer will use what is available and it's faster to use actual ram memory than virtual memory. I'd leave the min. at 1536 and set max to 4096.

You're not putting computer at risk. You're just telling it how much of your hard drive to use for virtual memory. By making it too big you allow programs to use it more than you use your ram memory. Virtual memory is slower than system memory (ram). By specifying a minimum and a maximum you're just telling windows how much hard drive you want it to use. If you had more system ram memory it wouldn't ask you this question. The system uses virtual memory when it runs out of system memory. When you get done using this SAT program it would probably be beneficial to set the virtual memory back to where it was previously.

I think there are two programs you can use on the MAC to run Windows programs. When you install either, what you get is a virtual copy of Windows. Once you're running that virtual copy, you should install the CE-200 software, which will run within that program. My understanding is it tends to be slow when installed that way; however, it's used to transmit designs to the machine, and once it does that, you don't need to use the software part, anyway. It will NOT slow down the machine.

There is a gotcha you need to know. I just took a look a the Parallels site, and it appears that when you install Parallels, you have your choice of running either Windows 7 or Windows 8. Those operating systems are available in 32 bit or 64 bit. If it is running the 64 bit version, you will also need to buy an upgrade to the CE-250 software, and if that's the case, you can generally find it on EBay, relatively inexpensively. I suspect, though, that it's running the 32 bit version of Windows, which will run fine.

When using internet sys runs very slow i'ts new normal prgrams installed pop up says to increase memory how

Does it specify if it's PHYSICAL MEMORY or VIRTUAL MEMORY?

If it was virtual memory, which is normal to receive Windows notifications about when running low, Windows would ask if you would like it to fix it for you; it would run its course in the background for a bit & ask for a restart.

If it asks to increase physical memory, then there's probably a program installed & your computer does not meet the memory requirements of that application; Although if it's really new and you have not added any new programs, there's a possibility that one (or more, if applicable) memory modules may not be working. they could either be busted or loosely seated. Yes, this DOES happen for computers out of the box.

Memory modules can be purchased from computer/electronics or select office supplies shops. You'll just have to find out what type of memory you have, how much is currently installed, & how much more the computer can support.

It's not as complicated as it sounds. Just click here to download & install the latest version of CPU-Z.After installation, just run the program & click on the Mainboard, Memory & SPD tabs, as seen below

rictutero_8.jpg

This will help figure out whit kind of memory modules & how much of it will have to be purchased.

When im on the internet pop up comes out saying CPU high

Maybe you are running to many programs in the background or to many pages are opened at once. Or you need to increase your memory. All these and more can be factors. CPU high does not tell me a lot and forces me to guess. With settings such as these critical as they are. I can only assume it is the virtual memory that is the issue which Windows can adjust the virtual memory itself. Or you can go and do this yourself. I would strongly suggest before messing with these settings that you go and read up on "How to adjust your virtual memory"

You didn't indicate what operating system you are running. On Windows XP, look in Control Panel: System, Advanced, Performance, Settings, Advanced, Virtual Memory. I believe it's in a similar location in other versions of Windows.

IMPORTANT: usually running out of virtual memory means that you are running too many programs at the same time for your system or one of them is attempting to use too much memory. You might also want to check out what's running when this happens and how much memory each program is using thus reducing usage factor when closing out certain programs.

I would also strongly suggest more memory and a better CPU or new computer with good capacity if this is not the case then you are running to many programs in the background close them out. A great program to use to work with this is ccleaner. This software "Free" will clean out your computer and registry and also allow you to see what is running in the start-up file. Click Here to download a free copy. I hope this gave you a better idea. Thanks for using FixYa! John

I had same problem on my new XP Home Edition . It's got 1GB of RAM and I reckon the software is just comparing the raw numbers i.e 1 is less than 3 so it doesn't think it has enough memory. I reset my Virtual Memory and the game works fine.
To fix, try this
Right-click on My Computer icon, and select Properties.
Click on the Advanced tab,
then select the Settings button within the Performance section.
In the Performance Options window, click on the Advanced tab, and then select the Change button in the Virtual Memory section.
Click the Custom size button...
Change the Initial size (MB) setting to 4000
Change the Maximum size (MB) setting to 4000
Select SET to accept the change, which will close the Virtual Memory window. Select OK to close the Performance Options window. And select OK to exit the System Properties window. Oh, and don't forget to restart your computer. I hope this helps.

Windows Virtual Memory Minimum is Low

fairly normal occurrence but you should have a look at your performance settings
go to control panel
double click system icon
click the advanced tab at the top
by performance click settings
in pop up window click advanced tab
at the bottom you'll see virtual memory
click change
most common option now is to set the radio button to system managed size
you should then ok each window.....
