Question about Sears Craftsman LiftMaster Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Wireless Keypad Model 976LM Security+

Can the travel limits on a Chamberlain security+ be reset?

My brother decided to work on my garage door opener while I was away. Now my travel limit adjustments are all out of whack. The door wants to travel down and up way too far. Is there any way to reset the limit screws to where they were when the opener left the factory? I can make the neccesary adjustments from there.

If you are at the back of the operator looking toward the door the limit adjustment should be on the left hand side.
The adjustment closest to the door is the down limit turn that 3 turns clockwise. The adjustment screw furthest from the door is the up limit turn this screw 3 turns counterclockwise. That should get you close to factor settings. If this does not work; remove the cover on the operator sometimes the limit assy. come apart.

There is no way to reset them to where they were when they left the factory but it should be easy enough to do. One turn of the control equals approximately 2 inches of trolley travel. If the door opens too far then you should be turning the control in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. Same for the down limit. Some tweaking will be needed I'm sure.

  • Open the garage dooricon1.png fully by pressing the wall control button. The bottom section of the door should be right at the header in the "full open" position. If it is too far back, the door cable can become misaligned. If it is not back far enough, you may not be able to get your vehicle in and out of the garage.

Position a stepladder behind the garage door openericon1.png motor. Locate the limit adjusting screws on the left side of the motor housing. Have a friend stand by the wall control button.

Press the button for the garage door to go down and it will only travel a couple of inches and shakes. Unlatch the door and press the button and the door will catch the latch on the way down and close. ...

Most likely cause is the load limiters. Firstly, the door needs to work perfectly, when worked manually. No stops or restrictions through entire movement. Then reset the load limiters to spec and test again. Up limit is not extremely critical, but the close load limit can save lives and prevent vehicle damage.

MY GARAGE DOOR KEEPS OPENING AND CLOSING. AND ONE OF MY SENSORS IS ORANGE INSTEAD OF GREEN. WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?

As I have mentioned in other post, re-program travel and force limits. Make sure that travel limit (down) does not go too far (thus excessive force). Apparently this system has a force sensor that senses if there is something in the way of the door. This is different from the safety sensor "eyes". The problem in your setup is that you have programmed the door to travel down too much and he system looses its ability to use force sensor. Adjust travel limit (down) to a little less travel and you will be fine.

TAKE OFF THE COVER & SEE IF THE LIMITS ARE WORKING CORRECTLY.

IF THEY ARE AND THERE IS JUST NOT ENOUGH TRAVEL YOU MAY NEED TO REMOVE THE CHAIN AND REINSTALL IT 4 OR 5 LINKS OVER THIS WILL INCREASE THE LIMIT.

You will have to open the unit and look inside it. Unplug it first. It should have 6-8 screws to take off. You will see 3 white plastic adjustment screws. There is a carriage they sit in. Make sure they are in this carriage. If you would like stay back a bit and plug it in and watch it run to see how it works. It is a direct contact system, so when the middle screw touches the copper limit of the limit screw it stops. Thanks BB

CHECK TO SEE IF HE TRAVELER IS AGAINST THE BOLT ON THE RAIL. IF IT IS YOU WILL NEED TO LOOSEN THE CHAIN / BELT TO GET IT TO MOVE THEN ADJUST THE TRAVEL LIMIT SO IT GOES UP / DOWN LESS AND DOESN'T HIT THE BOLT.

THE TRAVEL ADJUSTMENT IS ON THE SIDE.
YOU MAY BE ADJUSTING THE SENSITIVITY (TRAVEL LIMIT HAS NO MAX ADJ.)
BE SURE TO RESET THE SENSITIVITY ADJUSTMENT TO ABOUT 1/4

Chamberlain Power Drive 1/2 HP - motor runs but does not move chain

I have the same problem. I just removed the cover and discovered a nylon gear had been worn out. I found lots of shavings inside the cover. The nylon gear is beneath the exterior chain gear. I am looking for information on how to replace it, if I can find the part. If you decide to look at yours, unplug the power and remove the sheet metal screws securing the bottom portion of the cener cover to the front and back covers. Then just remove the upper screws from the center cover. Good luck.

    Not working

IT MAY BE AGAINST THE TRAVEL LIMITER BOLT.

IF IT IS YOU WILL NEED TO UNPLUG THE UNIT REMOVE THE COVER AND TURN THE MOTOR BY HAND TO BACK OFF THE PRESSURE.

MAKE SURE YOU GO PAST THE LIMIT SWITCH.
ADJUST THE LIMIT SO TH DOOR DOES NOT HIT THE BOLT.
