Question about Dell Dimension 3100 PC Desktop

1 Answer

No sounds of any kind

I replaced my cd-rom drive with a memorex cd-rw burner. I wasnt able to hear any sounds from the cd, so I removed it & put the original back in, making no changes. Now I have no sound whatsoever, such as the windows welcome chords or any other sounds. All troubleshooting says all devices are working properly. I'm at a loss -- Thanx, Rick

the 4-pin analog audio jack was not used with my original drive, the new drive came with a 4-pin cable, but theres no visible sound card to plug it into. the jumper is set to cable select, which is where it was originally

I went through all the troubleshooting screens & it said my drivers were digitally signed, they were the right ones, they were working correctly, etc. The speakers were both working fine up until I switched the cd drive, I dont think they just failed coincidentally.

Yes, I made sure the volume was up, & no mute boxes were checked, how do I check the BIOS ?

  • sprint100 Dec 20, 2007

I checked bios settings, all audio is enabled, I was wondering since my sound card is integrated, I have no place to plug the analog audio connector from the cd drive. If I added a sound card & hooked up the cable to it, would that help? According to that flow chart, If there's no analog audio cable hooked up, (which there was not originally) I wont be able to play audio cd's at all

Hi,

Did you connect the audio pins of the cdrom when you installed it? It's on the back and should be labelled.

I see...did you rule out drivers/bad speakers as the source of the problem?

I assume that you checked that the sound hasn't been muted by Windows? Did you check in your BIOS to see that maybe there is some sound setting that disables sounds or your sound card?

When you turn on your computer...look quickly and see what keys need to be pressed to access the BIOS (it's different with each manufacturer so I can't tell you exaclt what to press...it could be F1 or F2 or ctrl+alt+esc). Is Digital Audio on the Drive enable or disabled?

Adding a sound card and then using the 4 pin cable would work.

I have this cd-r by memorex that already has downloaded songs but i want to erase them and put new ones ...please explain how to do this...

You cant.

A CD-R (Compact Disc-Recordable) is a variation of the Compact Disc invented by Philips and Sony. CD-R is a Write Once Read Many (WORM) optical medium, though the whole disk does not have to be entirely written in the same session.
CD-R retains a high level of compatibility with standard CD readers, unlike CD-RW - which can be re-written, but is not capable of playing on many readers, and also uses more expensive media..

If you want to be able to use the disc many times, you need to buy CD-RW discs

How to delete content on cd-r from windows vista 64-bit

Hi and thank you for using fixya.
First of all you can only delete content when you have a CD-RW unit on your pc. Also the CD that you would like to delete has to be CD-RW as well. If all of the above apply follow this instructions:
1- you will put the CD in your computer. 2- go to my computer 3- open the D: drive 4- select all content 5- press the delete on your keyboard or right click delete
Hope it works
Good luck

try to put needle to small hole on front face of drive, but I recommend you to take warranty and get new drive, sometimes you buy faulty new things, that is normal, when almost every hardware is made in China...

Help with copying cds keeps saying that I have wrong format

the machine (pc or cd burner) that you are using is looking for a specific type (either cd-r / cd+r)
look on the front of the pc or cd burner to find what type it uses.
cd + r, cd + rw, cd - r, cd - rw or cd-rom. (+/-) r are for one time burning, (+/-) rw is for rewriting over and over and the rom is for games (playstation).......the + (plus) or - (minus) is very important.

feel free to rate if this is helpful

I have an IDE Memorex DVD±RW Dual Layer Burner (52x32x16) that has burned well over 300 cd/dvd' sense 2004 when I bought it. In 2006 or 7, an update was given to it via memorex sight - I was told to keep a copy of the dn ld, for it can't be undone and became "IDE Memorex DVD±RW Dual Layer Burner (523216)AJ___NWK____\5&265FB54&0&000" MODEL - I got it on sale from Fry's Elec. - It seems that it was indeed a 1 way ticket - and it is time to retire the old work horse anyway - Quite happy with your products and getting me another. PS - I don't think the upgrade did any justus
