Not quite sure what your problem is ,i have a 500 gig western digital external hd(my book) ,they are plug and play ,meaning that when you plug it in your computer automatically recognizes it and installs the proper drivers.does the power light come on when you plug it in,even though its pluged into an electrical outlet it will not light up until the usb is connected to a computer that can recognize it,mine came with all software allready installed on the drive, but you still have to explore the drive and run all the necessary install programs,if you cant access the drive or your computer doesnt find it when you plug it in,try plugging it into someone elses computer, just to make sure its not a problem with your computer,as far as a floppy disk, anytrhing western digital manufactures,is under warranty and free support at their website, that would be the place to get any software,or drivers you may need,or return it have them replace it,i think you may have a one year warranty,i abuse hardware daily, and i am extremly impressed with the performance of my w/d e book ,its has taken a beating, for 3years,i berak **** daily,i am a mobile tech and travel 50 tol 100 miles a day,my ebook is my dictionary ,resorse library, all my important troubleshooting programs, tech diagrams, and important info are on it,they dont like it when you drop them, mine has taken two hard hits, first time was ok second time had to reformat entire drive, you may need to get a program like partiion magic,or hirens boot disc, that have multiple tools for accessing the drive and repairing it,use these as a last resort if no warranty or help from western digital, good luck, hope this helps aloha from maui todd0708

Cannot read a bootable disk? cannot format? how to repair it?

are you sure the cd drive of the computer system is working fine? because if the hard drive is bad, the bootable disk should still go ahead and boot the system only that the hard drive would not be detected. so try and check your bootable disk some where else.

Not an absolute expert... unless you are onnecting via esata, it is a driver driven drive and will not be bootable.... USB and Firewire I do not believe are CMOS supported.

Besides that the through put on USB and Firewir are pathetic compared to a 'real' HD. USB claims 240MB/s but can not sustain that rate, Firewire 400 is only 400MB/s... Sata2 is 3GB/sec...

You need to format it before operating system loads . You have to insert bootable XP cd as you power up your PC.

Windows Server trying to boot from external hard drive

go into your 'update settings'. there is a section of where it asks you about how you want your settings set and where to send updates to. You may find the problem here. Check all the 'advanced' settings as well. If your Western digital is plugged in via USB and not requiring updates, unplug it while starting your system, after complete start up, reinsert the USB plug. It may show new devise found, then from here, you may be asked to reinstall it to stop the rebooting.

My Book firewire not bootable on mac

I picked up a couple of My Books lately( via Ebay), and noticed that i can not get them to work on the Firewire interface with my Dual Core Intel Mac. Shows up on USB2.0 fine however.I found an online reference that said Apple changed some things on the Firewire interface year or two ago, and that vendors had to update their firmware (it related to Firewire devices reporting a unique ID to the Mac).
