Icemaker repaired w/o unplugging unit-Now motheboard has failed!

About a 1 1/2 weeks ago, I called a local company for service on my GE SxS refrigerator ice maker. It seemed to be hanging off the back of the freezer and I found a screw on the floor. The repairman visited and quickly screwed the unit back up where it belonged, readjusted the water line and left. A few days ago, a week after the repair, I noticed a small amount of water on the floor under the appliance and both freezer and fridge were not getting as cold as usual. Tonight, I came home to find more water under the machine and found that the fridge/freezer food was warmer and there was a layer of frost along the back of my freezer, thick in some places. In response to my midnight emergency inquiry, the owner of another service company told me that the refrigerator should have been unplugged before the repairman rebolted the ice unit in place/adjusted the water line and, if the machine was not unplugged (it wasn't!), that the motherboard was probably damaged as a result. He said that the timeframe fit into place... it would take about a week or so after the board was compromised for it to completely fail. Am I correct to trust the owner of the new company's opinion and fault the icemaker repairman? Could this be the possible cause of my fridge's malfunction? Thanks for your time.

Thank you very much for responding so quickly... this is such a wonderful forum. I'm afraid that I've got quite a challenge on my hands later this morning when I have to confront the first repair company owner with my realization that her very, very young repairman seems to have compromised my fridge motherboard. I don't anticipate that she will be willing to rush right out and fix the fridge at her own expense by admitting negligence, although it would seem to be the decent thing to do. Unfortunately, this is a very new type of situation for me (I'm a relatively new homeowner) and I'll have to choose my recourse very carefully - ugh! I'm really dreading this. Thankfully, the gentleman who owns the emergency repair company is standing by to help me today at a moment's notice if I call for assistance. He said that the new motherboard would run about $400. I really, really appreciate that you've shared your time and expertise with me. Of course, if you have any thoughts on how to handle my upcoming uncomfortable repair situation, I would so gratefully welcome them. Thanks again... it's such a pleasure to meet you. Melissa

Sorry, but no.

The warranty is for 1 year - not a year and a day. You can't help but feel the way you do though, as it probably really did fail the day before but didn't notice until after. GE, like most big companies is very impersonal - your local repair man will service and replace parts without a problem, but he needs to get paid for those parts and of course, his time. Since he knows GE is not going to pay for the parts and labor, he has to look to you. If you've been trading with him for years, he might be able to shave some of his profit to save you a little money - but that's what he's doing for you - GE has nothing to do with it.

You should probably have the work done by him and then appeal to GE's customer service people about it. Save your repair slips and warranty information.. they can and might be willing to absorb a large portion / all of the repair cost in the spirit of good customer relations. You need to speak with these people respectfully and convince them of your brand loyalty over the years - remember, you want something from them - not the other way around. Cursing, yelling and otherwise abusive behavior will get you nowhere.

I hope this helps - good luck!

GE PSS26GRE SS not dispensing ice

Hi,
The first step you need to do is to turn the water off to the refrigerator so it quits making until you get it fixed.
If your fridge has the control boards in each side of the freezer cabinet that controls the icemaker, then you have a failed board. If you have a standard icemaker with the metal shutoff arm then you have a failed motor module in the icemaker. You can remove the icemaker and unplug the wiring connector from it so you can leave the water on to the dispenser.

Have you checked to assure the long narrow hose that comes from the upper lback left corner is attached both on top and inside the water tray? This drove me nuts for 3 hours.
