I have just received a new unit in place of my oldest one that crashed but it contains several folders with viruses. Could I format the unit (quick format NTFS) without affecting its normal behaviour as multimedia drive?
a multimedia drive usually just implies that "thermal recalibration" of the drive occurs without interfering with information flow .. on some non multimedia drives there is a noticeable gap in music or video as the drive periodically recalibrates its heads .. this is a hardware design feature so reformatting the drive shouldn't change that ... however i would recommend that you don't do a "quick format" .. that doesn't erase anything but simply marks all the drive space as free (available to be written over) .. a full format will erase any signs of the viruses you may have .. it takes a long time but that's needed if you want a clean drive .. the drive also gets tested with a full format ..

Thank you for your help!
My main concern was to delete files that would be needed to work as multimedia drive.
