Hmm, it seems that I have had a similar problem with my own dvd burner. Seems that the Laser used for DVD burning is broken or not working properly or you just need a firmware upgrade of your external DVD writer (you did mention reinstalling software, not firmware please clarify which one of the two it was).
OVERALL: In case the hardware misbehaves - Get a cotton swab soak it a bit in alcohol and try to clean the laser eye-lens inside the drive that reads/writes on the disks. It is usually located when you open up the drive. *NOTE: dont use too much alcohol and let it dry completely before using.
In case there is a software issue - Download the latest firmware for the specific LG multi drive burner or ask more details/user manuals on the product on the official support page HERE. NOTE THAT this product is discontinued.
Review: LG GSA-H42N Reviewed by:MegaDETH Provided by:LG - USA Firmware: RL00 and RL02 Manufactured: December 2006
The LG GSA-H42N internal IDE drive. LG's newest DVD burner incorporates DVD-RAM recording, creating a true DVD Multi drive. Single layer 4.7GB DVD burning is supported at 18X max. Double Layer and Dual Layer Recording speed is 10X max. DVD Rewriteable speeds are 8X max for DVD+RW and 6X max for DVD-RW respectively. DVD-RAM recording is supported at 12X max. Very fast 48X max CD-R burning and 32X max CD-RW.
Hope this answers your question.
Have a great day!
Pioneer has released Firmware for the DVR-107D DVD Writer and DVR-A07XLA & XLB DVD Writer. This release # is 1.18. http://www.pioneeraus.com.au/computer/firmware.html (a ZIP file download, but uncompresses to an .EXE, as does theflashman.rpc1.org site download. I can't uncompress the EXEs with Stuffit (standard) Expander v7.0x here, but Scott said he used version 8.0.2 ) Looks like we are getting closer to Dual Layer Support: (although some have flashed NEC ND-2500A drives to DL 2510 model firmware, I doubt that Pioneer will release an official firmware update for the 107D to add dual-layer burning. Like other mfrs, I suspect they'll sell a new drive model with DL burning support.)
well you really don't need drivers for xp+ systems. it should automatically be recognized. you just have to get cd/dvd burning software like Nero. according to this site that drive won't be recognized by vista with out a firmware update http://www.cdfreaks.com/review/13311-LG-GSA-H42N-Super-Multi-DVD-Writer-Review/
in window under my computer is your DVD writer shown as DVD-RAM drive, if not then re-instal the drivers for your DVD.
If its installed as DVD-RAM then right click the DVD-RAM icon in the my computer and choose properties, under the recording tab select enable recording, try burning a cd using the windows xp based roxio by sending your files to the DVD-ROM.
If it burn a CD this way then all you neec to do is use a different CD burning application software.
