Question about Garden

Dixon ztr 311 The left lever will not make the mower go forward and the right will not make it go back. Any ideas?

    Thanks again for the help! I striped it down and found the cone (5109) spinning freely on the shaft (5111). All the bearings seem fine. Does this mean the cone is worn out or the serrated part (5111) needs replacing? If so, How do you get the part (5111) of the shaft? The bottom cone seems fine.

    One last thing, Before I had my drive trouble My battery kept going flat. I replaced it but when I measure the voltage, It's the same while running and not. Shouldn't there be a few volt charge?

    I think I've found a prob! I think I was wrong about part 5111. Question, Does the cone have a steel lining that the key goes into? If so, the cone material has separated from the metal. Am I right?

The motion drive design is similar to a set of spider gears, except it uses friction material rather than bevel gears in the cluster. The friction material may be worn down to the point that it no longer engages and needs replacement. This is a likely scenario for the symptoms you describe.

The replacement procedure is a rather involved process. If you feel confident and are VERY handy, reply to this post and I'll be happy to go into detail.

    There was no serial number listed in your post, but that may not be a critical element at this time. The ztr 311 model was produced 1984 thru 1988 with some minor modifications along the way. I have included live links to some helpful pages for you at the bottom of this post. My best guess (after looking at the exploded views) would be that your transaxle bearings located on the cone frame shaft may have excessive wear and need replacement.

    Find a complete illustrated parts list (IPL) here from a random serial number that I picked out myself. (You will need Adobe Reader to open this file. Click here for the free Download from

    On page 4 of the IPL listed above, you can see the part number as 5028 Qty=2 for the bearings, and part number 5110 Qty=1 for the cane frame shaft. As you will see, the 5028 bearing is used on the horizontaly mounted "Cradle Shaft" as well, therefore all of these will need to be inspected for wear. The worn bearings can encourage premature wear on the "Discup" (part #5005) and the "Molded Cone" (part #5109) Qty=2 each, which are the items I mentioned in my first reply.

    You are correct. The material has separated.

    As for the battery, the battery posts should show 14VDC with engine at full throttle. If battery shows no change with engine revs, you have a charging issue. Most of the time the charging system is fused. Check for this first. If fuse is good, test integrity of the fuse "holder". These tend to get dirty and corroded. Replacements are very reasonable in cost.

unhook the pto safty swicth you might have to jump it or leave disconnetected see if that will help you need some more detail

My 12 year old Dixon ZTR mower turns to the right only slowly. Left turning is normal. The right steering lever has to be held farther forward than the left one to go in a straight line. Repair shop...

Hi, first check your tire pressures are equal then check/replace wheel drive belts and pulleys for uneven wear. If all ok adjust the drive link arms until it travels straight. Regards Phil.

I need a left rear axle for a dixon mower it is bent so the chain jumps off, and a diagram of the rear assembly. It is blue with the levers between your legs, it has a 12hp motor. I am not sure what year...

Should I buy a used 311 Dixon ZTR for my 1/2 acre yard?

Never buy one. Ever. Unless you have a mechanic from Dixon that will live with you to fix it every time you turn it on. I HATE it. If it isn't one thing, it is something else. Will not run. Tires a worthless. Seven thousand dollars of ****. Just call and complain and see if anyone cares. Nope. Cannot keep battery that works more than a summer. Nothing but trouble. Cannot get anyone west of the Mississippi to come to your house to service it. Must pull it in a trailer to get it serviced. Over all --junk. No one helps from Dixon, no one cares. Cannot wait until they go out of business. A sling blade would work better. Please get sheep or goats. Much more reliable.
