Cannot get a wireless connetion

I have DSL and can get online with my modem from Verizon plugged into the wall and computer. When I plug the modem into the Linksys router I cannot get internet (even with it plugged into my computer through the ethernet). Although the router is showing up as connected on my wireless connections no internet is available.

It seems that you have not configured your router for your DSL service correctly. Take a look at this article from Linksys on how to do that. Pay special attention from Step 7 onwards (PPPoE).

You did not mention which modem you are using. It might be that you have to change that device into "Bridge" mode, before you can connect your Linksys router. A good description about how to do that can be found here.

If that does not resolve your problem or you have any more questions, just come back here and leave a comment - I'm happy to help.

Sorry - I must have forgotten to send the first link in my post. Here is the corrected version:

It seems that you have not configured your router for your DSL service correctly. Take a look at this article from Linksys on how to do that. Pay special attention from Step 7 onwards (PPPoE).

    Some more explanation:
If your computer shows that it is connected to the router, then it does not necessarily indicate that your router is also connected to your DSL-modem.
    What happens is the following:
Your Internet signal comes into your house and is directed to your modem. (MODEM stands for modulator-demodulator. A modem enables a computer to transmit data over telephone (or cable) lines. Since computer information is stored digitally (1's and 0's), whereas information transmitted over telephone lines is transmitted in the form of analog waves, a modem converts between these two forms. That's all a modem does - not more, not less.)
This digital signal is now forwarded to your router, which "splits" the signal the the wired ports and to the antennas for wireless access. The router handles DHCP (the IP addresses to identify a device on the network), DNS (translation of names into numbers, i.e. "www.google.com" into 74.125.155.104), etc.

If your computer states that a "Wireless connection is established", then it only means that your are connected to your router. Changing the protocol to PPPoE simply instructs your router to give very specific commands to your modem. Take a look at the link I inserted above and note the difference in the pictures between step 2 and step 7. Step 7 is the setting for PPPoE and contains information like "Username" and "Password". This information is necessary to identify you with your Service Provider. Check your documents from your ISP (Internet Service Provider) or call them, if you don't have that information.

I hope this did shine a little light on the matter and - trying to explain it in simple language - gave you a better understanding.

If you have any more questions, just come back here and leave a comment - I'm happy to do my best.

Check if your router should be registered to verizon first. Or if ok, manually configure the router, maybe you have to set the DNS settings, and others.

Or inquire to your ISP how.

I need to know how to hook up a westell versalink ? i dont have directions & i have a dial up connection on my desk top . do i need a server ? i have no idea what to do !!

In order to setup the versalink you need an active DSL account, a phone line cord, a phone jack, a pc or mac, and an ethernet cord or wireless ethernet card. Plug in the phone cord to the phone jack and to the DSL port on the versalink- once the DSL light is solid, plug in the ethernet cord to the computer you have, or enter the wep key on the bottom of the modem into the wireless manager for your system. At that point, if you need further assistance in getting online, contact Verizon or Bell (whichever is your DSL provider)- they can and will walk you through setting up the versalink to connect to the internet.

I have verizon DSL with a wireless modem, but my xbox cannot connect to xbox live. I think this is a computer or modem issue. Any ideas?

Do u have the wireless jump in the xbox? It is about 100 dollars, or u can plug it in and see if it works then. The xbox does not come with a wireless card, you have to buy it seperately. I have mine plugged in to the modem and my computers are wireless, It was cheaper that way.

Can I use AT&T 2WIRE 2701HG-B DSL to ant ISP?

look if u wish to go for verizon service,,they will provide u with a wireless modem as well,,but if u tell them that u hav a modem then they might configure this modem only,,both ATT and verizon are DSL service providers with PPPoE connections.the only thing u need is the username and passwrd from verizon which u have to setup on the first page of the 2wire setup page,,both the connections are dhcp based.so no other connection settings change required. But when u talk with verizon make sure u tell them of the 2wire modem

Moreover verizon has wireless broadband service which is actually a express card tat u have to put into your computer and u can go online anywhere u go within ur country{it works like a mobile phone}

best of luck,,keep me posted

you have the DSL filters plugged into all your telephones, but NOT plugged into the DSL modem?

is the DSL modem configured to automatically connect using your username and password?

have you tried using a different phone cable, or plugging into a different phone jack?
