The picture tubes in these models (red, green and blue) use a liquid coolant to keep them cool. In this set usually the blue and green fluid will become contaminated which has a major impact on picture clarity and brightness. If you take the screen off and look directly into the lenses you will see directly how bad the fluid looks. The Red usually is not affected by this problem.

The buzzing could be a noisy coil or possibly a high voltage leak. There may also be some leaking fluid involved in this as I have seen fluid gather around the high voltage cup (underside of the tubes) and cause the high voltage to arc a bit causing noise as well.

This repair is not for the faint of heart as it involves removing the affected tubes, disassembling, draining, sanitizing, reassembling, refilling, reinstalling and realigning them. The glycol based fluid is messy and it's easy to get into big problems if there are any leaks, as the leaks will usually end up on the main pc board. Our shop charges about $350 for this repair.

My magnavox tv is making a buzzing sound, no picture, and wont change channels (just a dark screen)

Something has shorted in the set causing the power supply to make that buzzing sound. Most likely the short is in the horizontal circuit. The horizontal makes the high voltage work which in turn lights the picture tube.

Vizio makes loud static noise, picture goes fuzzy.

You should check your home wiring and grounding. Also be aware of anything that has recently been turned on when this happens. Anyone using a microvwave, cell phone, or other appliance that might be causing the interference.

Fuzzy picture

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become  cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

Magnavox 60'' rear projection screen tv

That oil is glycol and is a coolant for the tube. Hope you didn't get the oil on the circuits because it is conductive and the tv will not operate with the oil on it. Must be completely full. Can be bought a electronic parts distributors or a tv shop could order you a bottle. Hope you just removed one tube only. Make sure you seal it back good

BIG TROUBLE with my 52" Phillips Magnavox Rear Projection Tv, HELP!!

It sounds like the 3 "GUNS" are not aligned.
One the controls at the bottom, left hand side You will see an arrow pointing to the first 2 on the left.
That will allow you to scroll down the list of options until you see....CONVERGANCE!
make the red gun center by using the up/down arrows on right. Then add the next 2 until you see a white X or cross.
Thats it!

Buzzing Noise and TV picture is yellow

Andy, I'm thinking the buzz is from the deflection coil (yoke) on the neck of the tube or the power supply. Probably not the high voltage as you can hear the "buzz". If it's really that annoying, you can take a length of rubber tubing (no metal) and listen to the buzz coming from the chassis kind of like a stethoscope. STAY AWAY FROM THE HIGH VOLTAGE, please. The yellow picture sounds like a blue chroma failure. A tube can be rejuvinated if need be but that's a job for a pro. Hope this helps.
