Question about Western Digital WD Passport 250GB Portable Drive 250 GB Hard Drive

How do I completely reset my external hard drive

I tried to transfer stuff from my laptop to my new external hard drive to free up space on music, movies, and other stuff. What i want to do now is basically reset everything i did right, or wrong. I want to empty my external hard drive and put everything back on my laptop. I don't want to create new duplicates or any type of problems. I simply want to reset everything to the point as if i had never done anything with the wd external hard drive.
Thank you

1. You need to check how much free disk space is available on your laptop.
2. You need to check what duplicated files you have on both the laptop and the external hard drive and which is the latest version.
3. You need to decide to move the latest versions of the data files from the external hard drive to the laptop. This automatically delete these from the external hard drive. The older versions on the external hard drive can be deleted.
4. Now you need to check how much data is stored on your external hard drive.
5. If the amount of data stored on the external hard drive exceeds the available disk space on the laptop, then you cannot copy these files to the laptop.
6. If you have sufficient disk space on the laptop you can copy the data from the external hard drive to the laptop. I suggest you make a folder to copy this data to it.
You can now delete all the data from the external hard drive or you can format the external hard drive to make a clean external hard drive.

How do I use my WD hard drive to store files so I can free up space on my laptop hard drive?

Hi:
That's an easy task:
1) Plug your Hd to your laptop and wait until the laptop recognize it as a new drive and assign a new letter to it. If you have a disc use it if your laptop ask for it.
2) Copy all files you want to transfer to the new HD and paste them on it.
That's it.

Im want to change my hard drive cause the one thats in the laptop now has 6495 mb

There are a few different options available.
You can purchase a new hard drive to install inside the notebook, or you could purchase an external hard drive and move documents, music, movies, etc to it from the notebook. Purchasing a new hard drive for the laptop may entail reinstalling your OS then reinstalling all of your programs. This can be a long and tedious task.

When you say the notebook has 6495MB, do you mean it has 6495MB of free space? Have you tried running disk cleanup and defragmenting the hard drive? Those two maintenance tasks may free a lot of space. 6.3GB is not what I would consider low disk though.

My laptop is in low disk space it was very lag

It would be wise to buy an external Hard Drive and transfer some files to it (especially pictures, video, music that you don't need often).

Just because you transferred it to your external hard drive. You will still have the files on your internal HD. You will need to delete the files off your internal HD and they will still be on your External HD. I had to do this with mine and other clients.

I have no volume on my dell inspiron e1505. How can I fix this?

hey there, open up my computer and right click on your c drive. This will open a window with a pie chart showing used and free space. If you are out of free space I would run cc cleaner located here .

run the top two cleaners located in the left column. This will clean up all of your trash. Next, any files such as photos or music, transfer to disc, external hard drive or a usb flash drive as your disk drive is too small. Another option would be to get a larger hard drive. Most computers have space to add another inside or the easiest would be to purchase a usb external drive, move all files to it and leave your programs on the hard drive you have. If you need more help, let me know.

Cannot transfer files that are greater than 4GB

The lack of free space iis on your internal HD not the external. Whenever transferring files from one drive to another, you are acturally making a copy of the file to be transferred and sending the copy to the new drive. If your internal HD is nearly full, you can try to Cut and Paste the files to the external, or clear up more space on your internal b/4 tryiing to move the bigger files. Best of luck.

Hard drive space needed

Simply buying the external hard drive is one thing. Did you simply plug it in, copy stuff over, or _move_ stuff over? You have to move stuff over in one spot to make room elsewhere. Cut-and-paste is your friend. Do not move programs this way -- just data, like videos, music, photos and word processing documents.

There's a wonderful program called ATF-Cleaner from http://www.atribune.org that can also search your computer for unused files. (Windows has a built-in program, too: click Start: Accessories: System Tools: Disk Cleanup). But the ATF-Cleaner is a bit more thorough, does more stuff. You may be simply wasting a surprising amount of hard drive space on stuff like temporary files that became pretty much permanent. You can also free up some space by deleting old System Restore files and the clike -- look through Disk Cleanup.

Hard drive/memory/speed

music files and photo files take up a lot of memory/space on a hard drive. If you are using your flash dirve (external drive) to upload songs, phots etc to a website (i.e. Facebook;MySpace etc.) you can upload them directly from the external drive rather than loading them to your computer. I suggest, that if you have a cd/dvd burner, burn all music and photo files to dic, if your external drive is for temporary storage. Once you have done this, remove all music and photo files (except any you may want to use as start up theme music, background use for desktop etc.) then, degragment your hard drive, C:\. Once the degragmentation is complete, close all programs and reboot your computer. NOTE: while you can operate the computer while a defragmentatioin is in progress, any use slows this process, as degragmentations (or defrag's) can take some time to complete (i.e. 1 hour or more depending on the status of the computer and it's need for being defragmented) You can run an analasys to determine if it need to be defraged. This can be done under the Start Menu,All Programs, Accessories, System Tools,Disc Defragmenter: When Disc Defragmenter Opens, it will give you a list of the internal (hard drives, including the D:/ Partitioned Drive) Select C:\ and click on Analyze. This should only take a few minutes to complete. Once the Analysis is complete, it will tell you directly whether or not the computer (Drive C:\) needs to be defragged. In the event it does not, You can also run a Disc Cleanup: Go to Start Menu, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disc Cleanup. Be careful doing this as you do not want to remove any programs that you use on a regular basis, or frequently, that the computer automatically may deem "seldom used". Here, you can remove, or uninstall programs and files that you or the computer do not need, and free up space. Freeing up memory or space will improve speed a little bit. Depending on the OS (operating system) and it's current grade (upgraded or not) - you may need to have more memory and RAM installed.
