Re: LCD display

Could be a lot of things: here is general tips for no backlight:

First if there is a suspend switch (usually right below the LCD sticking out of the notebook) make sure its not pushed down.

second: Did the LCD have a red tint before it failed? if not its probably the inverter. If it did then its probably the backlight, but its best to test the inverter using a known good LCD first.

If you dont have one, then any repair shop that deals with laptops4.gif should be able to diagnose this pretty quickly (you shouldnt pay more than a 1/2-3/4 hour labor to take apart and diagnose.

if it really needs a backlight, it is a very difficult thing to replace the backlight - i see more people break the screen or electronics on the LCD trying to replace a backlight. always try an inverter first which is only about $20-$50 for the dells.

Its usually comparable in cost to buy an LCD ($100-$200 for the part on most models) than replace the backlight (150-220 is the typical labor charges i have seen. Just find out the part number of the LCD to match up a replacement. Try Bliss which sells screens on ebay - nice company to deal with and has a wide variety of screens,

Hope this helps!

Backlight issue for an Acer Aspire 8730 It will turn on for anywhere from 1 to 6 seconds by use of the F6 function. It turns on and off turning the boot up process, but ultimately it stays off. I can see...

Most of the times it is the back light issue (failing Inverter or the CCFL-Lamp). Acer Aspire 8730 has 2 lamps and it is highly unlikely that both of them fail together. Hence, I suspect the failing Inverter. Secondly, I have come across a few issues related to back light failing/ flickering etc, which were due to loose connections and LCD cable only. There are, I think, 3-4 connector (from motherboard to inverter- Inverter to lamp, Cable from motherboard to LCD for data) and 1 cable from the motherboard to the LCD. If there is any loosing or the cable is damaged, the back light flickers when you open or close the lid, however, when the Inverter or the Lamp fails the display is completely dark all the time. Furthermore, the Inverter supplies high voltage to the lamps, therefore, proper precautions should be taken while working inside LCD. If you are familiar with working/ troubleshooting such electronics, you may check for the loosing / faulty cable etc. and try to fix them yourself. Otherwise, if it is the faulty lamp or Inverter, it is highly recommended that you seek assistance from authorized professional for repair.

Hope it helps! Good Luck! Thanks for using Fixya!

I have ACER /LX.N230 laptop 9 mths old and sceen has stopped working other lights work but no screen ?

If you have a spare computer monitor, hook it to the back of the video output, if the monitor functions properly then the LCD screen on the laptop is at fault. The causes are a bad inverter board more common, to a faulty display lamp behind the LCD screen. If you still have warranty I recommend returning the item for repair because of the expence involved.

I shut my computer down, I then traveled about 10 minutes in a car. When I arrived the computer had not been dropped and nothing hit it. When I attempted to turn it on it booted all the way. I could hear...

It is for sure that a damage is done on the LCD and it needs to be checked on HOW THIS HAD HAPPENED.
It seems that if the laptop was not shut but the LCD display door was made to stay OPEN while you were driving then the motion/vibration could have damaged the LCD or the linking wires to the LCD panel. Check carefully on the hinges of the laptop and see if there is any cracks. Also if there is display on an external monitor then the PC is working fine . You can open the laptop and ccheck if any connector of the LCD panel is loose. If no the LCD is a suspect and You must take an opinion from HP. Claim for warranty if the time limit is within.

The backlight on my gateway m 6750 is out. i think it is the lidswitch but can't find it. can someone tell me where the switch is located on my laptop.thanks

The LCD screen displays is dark/ dim (faint display that can be seen in sunlight or torchlight) because there is no backlight.
There are two parts responsible for lighting the display. First is the CCFL (Cold Cathode Florecent Lamp), which is the back light and the second is the Inverter board, which provides high voltage to the CCFL. Either of the parts can be faulty or in some rare cases both. But most likely it is the CCFL (Lamp). Its life is limited and depending upon how long it has been in use, you can have a better idea - if its the CCFL or Inverter.
(You can check it by connecting you PC with some external display, which would work fine). (Hence, the board/ graphics processor is OK. In case the graphics processor fails, there is no display at all on the external monitor).
The LCD display switch in inside the modern laptop and its function is that it completely shuts down the display (no light as well as image).
So, my advice is that you check the LCD display for replacement of CCFL. I have found a general link about CCFL replacement. Click here for detailed and graphical DIY instructions about LCD disassembly.
Make sure you take proper precaution while working inside LCD, as the inverter generates a very high voltage.

Hope it helps! Good Luck!

Compaq EVO N1000C boots up to desktop, but the screen is not on.

How do you know that it boots all the way when you cannot see anything on the screen?

To check if the video card on the laptop is functioning properly, connect the laptop to an external monitor. When you boot up you may see Windows start on the monitor, if not press the Fn key plus one of the Function keys that switches (toggles) between the LCD and the external video (usually one of the keys from F3 to F8).
If you don't get a video image then the video card which is part of the motherboard, is faulty - it can't be repaired cheaply, usually requires a new motherboard.
If you get a video image on the monitor, then the LCD could be faulty or the LCD video and/or backlight connectors on the motherboard is not making proper electrical connection. Then it may be fixed by reseating them.

Screen Don't Comes On Anymore

Have you tried plugging an external monitor into the VGA connector on the back? This would narrow down the problem to either the video card/motherboard or the LCD display itself.

There are several possible defects- as above, the display, motherboard component, video section.

Also, first check the LCD/CRT switching function. On many laptops, there is a function (FN) key which is pressed at the same time as one of the number/function keys (the uppermost row of keys), and this combo will switch display from LCD to CRT & both.

LCD Display behaving badly

It sounds like the ribbon connector or flexible connector is not seated quite right. I would open up the unit again and carefully inspect this or any other cable that you had unplugged.  Reseat these properly and power it up again.

These cables can be very easy to damage if not replaced properly. Take special care.
