I am trying to install a lexmark 6200 series printer via my network on my new Toshiba with Windows Vista. I get the error message "enable bi directional communicaton", my button says enable bi direction support, I check it, hit apply but it won't stay checked so I continue to get the error message.

I have a printer on my main computer and am now installing is via network to my new toshiba windows visat laptop, the printer is a Lexmark 6200 series. I have installed windows vista drivers to the laptop. The error message when I hit print indicates that I need to check the "enable bidirectional communication" box. When I do so, it will not save the check even after hitting apply.

Hi there Kellie,

On your compuer, open Control Panel to select printers in the "hardware and sound". Select your Lexmark 6200 and right click, select Properties.

Click Ports tab and uncheck "enable bidirectional support". Click Apply or Ok. Restart the printer then try again.

Please let me know if this works for you so we can give your other solutions.

Ensure that you have done a network setup, and not a setup on USB. Ensure that you follow the user guide on setup. Guide is available on the CD. Insert CD, start it with auto run and click on the ? to the right of View User's Guide on the CD presentation screen.
Try removing the printer from installed printers, and install it again.
Ensure that security software is not affecting driver setup, always make sure that you allow the setup program access to system if prompted.
If that does not work, try again turning off the bidirectional communication int printer properties.
Go to control panel and locate the printer folder.
Right-click the on the Lexmark 6200. If you have more than one 6200, ensure that it is the network printer that you are connecting. Click the "ports" tab at the top properties window , then click off the check box that says enable bidirectional support .

Print sharing

No matter how you slice it, if you want to share the printer, you will be creating a network. If I remember this printer correctly, it has an Ethernet port to connect to a network or USB to connect ot a computer. If your router supports wired connections, you can connect it there and just inistall drivers on each device and selec tthe network option. If not, you will probably want to connect it via USB to your desktop machine and enable print sharing on that machine. Te enable printer sharing, open up the Network and Sharing Center. In the Sharing and Discovery section, turn on the option for Printer Sharing. You will still need to install the XP driver on the netbook and select the network option, but give it the proper network location (ie.\\mycomputer\this printer).
