All of the "N" routers I have seen are backward compatible to the 54 Mb "G" standard. An "N" router on your network will mot likely not work any better than the old "G" router did (unless there was something wrong with it) if you continue to use the old "G" card in the PC.

To take advantage of the greater range and other technical advances that the "N" router offers, an "N" card should used in the PC, too.

To maximize speed and reliability of any wireless "G" network, decrease as much a s possible, the distance between the "G" router and wireless PC.

An open air, "line of sight" path is best. A path through gypsum board, wood, foil backed insulation, brick, concrete, steel goes from "OK" to "very difficult". Basically, the thickness and type of material can affect the signal. The harder it is for you to drill through the material - so is the difficulty of passing a wireless signal through (more or less).

Minimize interference by reducing or removing any cordless 2.4 Ghz telephones, intercoms, etc. These devices *can* significantly reduce the range of wireless G networks. Try it yourself by unplugging the base and removing the battery from a handset to see if this is a source of interference for your location.

I put in a high speed motom and now my router has a weak signal. other devices in the same room can only get a weak signal or no signal.

1-Is it a cable modem? The new ones Cox has out are DOCSIS-3 and if your router is several years old you may want to replace it with a router that is designed for DOCSIS-3. I kept my DICSIS-2 router (3 yrs old).
2-You should do a few speed tests to confirm performance then talk to your internet provider about your connection. I had to have Cox come out to check things and they replaced a component on their side.
3-Do have a friend or a neighbor going through the same thing? I did, we compared notes and got to the bottom of it.

Good Luck

II have been trying to connect wirelessly my new HP lap top to an old series 600 but the computer can't connect even after entering the key. It works ok on cable.can any one help

1. your issue is due to a a wireless laptop is not compatible with the old router or
you may need a firmware upgrade.
2. the cold compute may be able to connect via a cord (Ethernet) but not wirelessly due to an outdated driver for the network card ( the card will need updated drivers also) if it is a wireless b card then the ability to us a WAP key will not be possible
because your card was designed to use WEP key.
3. a new wireless G card installed to the old PC will allow connectivity if the wireless card is backwards compatible.
4. most all PC's can connect via a Ethernet cord they are all designed that way and have not changed for the 20 or 30 years they have been in use.
I hope this helps. Have a great day!

Have a Wierless-G router can not install, tried 3 times. While installing it has very limited range , pc is 4-5 feet away & couldnt pick it up. Any ideas ???

check the wireless settings of the router. try to change the channel of the wireless network.
SSID broadcast should be enabld on the router. It depends on the computer also.
If your router is old then upgrade the firmware of the router. firmware is the software of your router.

Can I boost signal strength?

You will need to get hold of a Belkin Wireless G Universal Range Extender relays the signals of your wireless network and extends its range model number F5D7132 from PC world or another online dealer.

You will still need the wireless router as the central connection point, using the booster your network now reaches further I have one at the top of the stairs with the Router downstairs to I can browser wirelessly in the loft conversion of my old house

If your laptop does not have a wireless card built into the computer then yes I would go and buy a usb wifi adapter because you cant get wifi if you dont get one.

Any brand should compatible with your Westtell, as long they have same range of frequency (i.e 2.4 GHz, 5.8 GHz), etc...

I will recommend 3Com, Linksys and D-Link.

Trouble creating wireless access point from D-Link DI-514 router

1. Connect a pc to the router using a cable (wireless won't work)
2. Open a browser and type in: 192.168.0.1
3. Login with username: admin password: (blank)
4. Browse around the menus until you find a setting similar to "use as access point" and select it.
5. Save settings and log out.
6. Connect a cable from a port on your main router to this router's internet/wan port.

Trouble creating wireless access point from D-Link DI-514 router

You should be able to plug the D-Link into any of the Linksys wired ports (not the Uplink port) and tell the D-Link to get an IP address from the Linksys router (as long as the Linksys router has DHCP turned on). Verify that both boxes are on the same network (192.168...) and don't have the same IP address. What happens when you do this? Can you get to the Linksys & D-Link from a wired workstation?

Broadband router range

If you have wireless N router. You should install wireless N adapter on your children's computers as well. That way, they are compatible with each other coz I guess your children's PC has wireless G adapters. You wont be able to utilize the N signal of the router if your using wireless adapters..
