I dont know if i can type the solution without showing you pictures, but i will try my best.

The easiest solution is to unscrew the bottom screws, then flip the system so it is right side up. take the top off and lay it to the side, careful not to pull out or break the attached cable going from the top to the "innards." unscrew the four screws that hold the top of the DVD drive on, then take off the top plastic part. Using a cloth dipped in rubbing alcohol, clean the laser being careful not to press hard or displace it. you dont want the cloth dripping wet, just enough to do its job. after this put top of the DVD drive back on and test it.

The more difficult solution involves adjusting the distance the laser is from the disk. After taking off the plastic piece on top of the DVD drive, you again see the laser. press the eject button on the PS2. This will move the dvd tray letting you see the "innards" of the dvd drive. Towards the back of the dvd drive, there is a white gear partially visable. It looks to be located over the ribbon cable connected to the laser. Using a sharpie or other marker, mark the position of the gear exactly where it is now. You then move the gear 2 notches to the right or left, then screw the top of the DVD case in and test a disc. if it works, CONGRATS! if not open it back up and move the gear back to the origional position you marked earlier and then go two notches in the other direction.

This gear controls the distance the laser is from the disc and your goal is to optimise the distance so your system works properly. With a little luck and patience im sure you can fix this :).

No disc error on DVD player

Is this with all discs that you try to play?
Some thoughts on this matter...
Home written discs, written on another machine that hasn't finalised them won't play.
Try purchasing a DVD laser cleaning disc and cleaning the laser may do the trick.
Mistreated, badly handled or dirty discs may not be recognised.

My ps2 wont read any discs includindg brand new goes straight to browser menu even with disc in

try cleaning the laser lens with a q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol (not dripping).
use the other end to gently dry it (twirl the q-tip).

or you can use a laser lens cleaner for video game systems.

hope this helps : )

PS2 does not read the disc.

Have you cleaned the laser? Try that first and if that dosen't help then your laser might be dead.

System not recognising disc

Is it only happening for this one disk? If so, I'd say it's probably a bad disk. I've ran into a couple of those before. Probably an error in production, I'd suggest taking it back and exchanging it for another copy.

If it's happening to most or all of your games, then it's probably a sign that the laser is going out. You could try cleaning it - get any CD or DVD cleaning kit and follow the instructions. If that doesn't work, you may need to replace the laser. That's a bit more involved, and more expensive, but I can help you with it if it comes to that.

Disc won't spin. Disc doesn't show up in browser

You got a problem with the lasers data getting back to the Motherboard.
One of these could be your problem

  1. Laser lens is melted. Look at the lens with a magnifying glass to see if it or its supporting frame is melted. REplace the laser in this case.
  2. The ribbon Cable going from the Laser to the motherboard is damaged or loose.
  3. Your laser is burned out. Press the two interlock to override the door being open, to see if the laser even lights up. 2 switches, one at rear left corner, one behind the On/reset switch.
  4. Your Laser is dirty and needs cleaning look at it with a magnifying Glass to make sure you got it clean. Use Q-tip and window glass cleaner, not alcohol.

DVD disc is not recognised

itsmylife70, hello.

Two things, Laser gone low and can't read dvd. Just try cleaning the collimating lens with a cotton swab and glass cleaner. gently wet one end and dry residue with the other end.
The other thing is could be just a mutilated loom (flex) cable connecting the laser from the main pcb board. Laser is most likely gone bad.

Good luck.
