If head cleaning and alignment have not worked try changing the cartridges to ensure that the printer minus the cartridges is alright. If there is any fault with the cartridges, as you say black and cyan are the cause of worry, try changing them with new ones. Yes I agree it is an added expenditure but better than changing the printer and then finding out that the cartridges were faulty. Best of luck.

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. The horizontal lines appear while printing if the ink dries up and while printing these spots are missed and it appears as dark horizontal lines. If the printer is not used for a long time, the inks in the cartridges dry up and these lines appear. Remove the cartridges, clean the cartridge slots with a soft cloth and reseat them after a minute. Please do this while printer is turned off.

You'll also need to perform printhead cleaning. To check these out in Windows XP, click Start and then Printers and Faxes. Right-click on the printer and click on printing preferences. This displays the Printing Preferences dialog box, which houses various layout and print-quality preferences, as well as the printer’s maintenance options.

Click the Maintenance tab to view what your printer can do from a software perspective. There will be 2 cleaning modes—cleaning and Deep Cleaning. Cleaning isn’t quite as time-consuming as the Deep Cleaning mode, but Deep Cleaning mode does a more thorough job and can resolve some issues that the normal Cleaning mode can’t. Just click the proper cleaning mode to start it and let the cleaning process run its course. You may have to do this a number of times to get the print head clean.

Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or else revert for further assistance.

Thanks

    Hi

Open the Applications folder on your hard drive, then open
the Utilities folder and double-click the Print Center
or Printer Setup Utility icon. Select any one of the appropriate printers from
the list, then click the Configure or Utility button.

Follow the steps below to clean the print head using the
    Head Cleaning utility--

    • Make
sure that Letter-size paper is loaded in the sheet feeder.

    • Make
sure that the EPSON PRINTER is on and the “!” Error light is off.

    • Access
the Epson Printer Utility dialog box.

    • Click
the Head Cleaning button in the Utility dialog box.

    • Follow
      the on-screen instructions.

    • Head
cleaning... appears on the LCD panel while the EPSON PRINTER performs the
cleaning cycle. Also see this link for details---

    Print head cleaning

    Caution: Never turn
off the EPSON PRINTER while Head cleaning... appears on the LCD panel. Doing so
    may damage it.

    When Head cleaning...
disappears from the LCD panel, click the Confirmation button in the Head
Cleaning dialog box to print a nozzle check pattern. Use the check pattern to
confirm that the print head is clean.

If the print is good: Print head does not need to be cleaned
    again.

If the print is Not Good: Print head needs to be cleaned.

If the nozzle check page does not print satisfactorily, you
may need to repeat the head cleaning and print the nozzle check pattern again.

You can manually clean the printhead by--

Take out the black and color cartridges. Put them on a suitable
dish or tray upside down. Put a few drops of alcohol in the ink holes to keep
them wet. Repeat as needed - don’t let them dry out. Keep plenty of paper
towels handy. Put the black cartridge
filled with alcohol into the printer. Look into the color cartridge holder. You
will see a shiny metal tab. When this is depressed it tells the printer that a
cartridge is in the printer. Look at the indicator light next to the power
switch. The green light will be on. Push the tab, it will go off. This tab must
be depressed for the cleaning function to work.

The indicator light will be off when you get it right. Put
several drops of alcohol into the colored ink wells before blocking the tab and
closing.the lid. You could use an old, cleaned-out, colored ink cartridge for
this if you wanted. With the alcohol cartridge in place and the colored side
rigged, clean to your hearts content. You will run alcohol through the black
side and not waste any colored ink in the procedure. The above technique can be
reversed or varied to clean the colored heads.

Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or else revert for further assistance.

    Thanks

    Rylee

My brother CIP-J140W is only printing in cyan. I had accidentally put the cyan cartridge in the black cartridge spcae. Despite changing them around, cleanre the head etc, it is still only printing in cyan....

Oops, You really have to print, selected black, till all Cyan ink is gone. This could take a while. Cleaning the head, won't solve anything.
If you really want to clean the ink out of the head and everything, you need special cleaning fluid. Refill shops do have this fluid. You should bring some cleaning fluid in the tube under the black cartridge, in the tube where the ink is going in. If you have a syringe you could try to gently press some fluid through the tube. Not to strong. could damage the head.
After placing back the black cartridge, select clean the head and let the printer do some black and withe print jobs, till the cyan is gone.

I'd say it's probably the printer driver. Uninstal and reinstal it or update it. Printer drivers are a comon cause of printing faults.

Horizontal colored lines through grayscale printed photos

Hi George,

It sound's like an ink-feed issue:

1) Dirty heads, even after cleaning
2) No-ink or poor quality ink
3) Damaged head: some are part of the cartridge, some are not
4) Air bubbles in ink

The test page is typically not as hi-res nor as saturated as a
photo print. The hi-res photo puts the greatest demand on the print head.

The color lines you see are actually lines of missing color,
where the head has failed to deposit ink, so one or two primary
colors are missing from the complete picture.

For example missing yellow will make a blue line.
Missing magenta will make a green line
Missing cyan will make a red line.... etc..

Clean the heads again and again, print again and again,
hoping to flush the system.

BUT, keep in mind that cleaning wastes huge amounts of
ink and tiny little cartridges of ink cost more than many new printers.
