Question about Garmin Nuvi 660 GPS Receiver

1 Answer

My Nuvi 650 does not seem to be charging from the car cigarette lighter. The last time we used it, it warned of low battery inspite of the fact that we had it plugged into lighter. Now, it turns off immediate upon start with what I assume is a bad battery.

Make sure your charger is working. If the charger is working, you will see a yellow lightning bolt over the battery status indictor. If you unsnap the Nuvi from the mount with the charger on you will see the lightning bolt go away and the Nuvi will beep. It will also beep when you snap it back on the mount. Now if you are not seing the lightning bolt symbol, then there is a problem with your car charger and the battery isn't being charged. Now if you do see the lightning bolt and the battery isn't holding a charge, then yes, I agree the battery is bad and needs to be replaced. - Jim SHARCNET-USA

If you are using the car cigarette lighter adapter, the fuse could have blown. To check fuse Unscrew the silver tip end of plug CAREFULLY its spring loaded and check fuse....if you used the USB connector to charge unit it must be charged for a few hours to fully charge.

When using wire in car, Garmin won't turn on, it starts, shows a low battery sign and shuts down. Was working fine on recent trip. It seems no power is reaching GPS. Nuvi 765T

Most likely the fuse in the charger plug has blown. The plug that goes into the cigarette lighter socket has a ring near the end. On most chargers it's silver but some of them are black. If you unscrew this ring the plug comes apart. Be careful not to lose any parts. You'll see the fuse in there. Replace it and it should be ok.
The other possibility is that the cigarette lighter socket is not working. You can check that easily enough by trying something else in it.

My garmin nuvi 650 na keeps depleting its battery even though I just fully charge it on the computer. It also does not charge when I plug it in the cigarette lighter in the car. The screen turns dark...

well if you have the factory car charger. There is a fuse inside of it. This is indicated in the manual. But it could also be the cigarette lighter fuse in the car is blown. I would make sure the cigarette outlet has power. If the cigarette lighter has power and you have the factory power cable that has a fuse try this. f the unit will not charge in your vehicle, you might need to replace the fuse that is located at the tip of the vehicle adapter.
1. to change the fuse unscrew the black, round end piece on the vehicle power adapter and remove it. inspect the fuse to see if it is blown. If not end here.
2. if determined the fuse is blown remove the fuse (glass and silver cylinder), and replace it with a 1A fast blow fuse.
3.ensure that the silver tip is placed in the black end piece. screw on the black end piece
let me know how this works by following up with a comment and i can instruct you on where to go from here. Thanks.

My cigarette lighter doesn't work, do I need it to

You can use it on its internal battery but they only last an hour or two. If you can't fix the lighter socket you could add one fairly easily then the Nuvi will last for the whole trip running on car power

Charging the battery in Nuvi 760

1) Check the cigarette lighter is working by plugging in the lighter unit and see if it gets hot. If it doesn't then it is possible the fuse has blown.

2) You can plug the unit into a PC using the USB cable and if there is a fault you will get a message on the screen about 'USB over-current' but it shouldn't damage the computer.

If it runs/charges using the PC and (1) is OK then you may have a problem with the cigarette lighter - cradle cable or a problem with the cradle itself.

My Garmin Nuvi (200 I think) freezes..

My recomendation is to use the original accesory for cigarete lighter. I'll give you an example: when I connect my Nuvi 200 to any other USB cable (computer or home charger) its behaviour is like you said - it "says" that is connected to a computer and remains in stand by. But when I connect it to cigarette lighter (but note - the original one) the nuvi 200 recognize it as a car power source and works. The battery symbol disappear from screen and it works perfectly. When I turn off the engine or simply unplug the device from cigarette lighter (not from nuvi !) it recognizez that and ask me if I want tu turn it off on remains on on own battery. If I make no option the nuvi will turn off automatically after some seconds. So it recognize perfectly the car adapter and its behaviour is adapted to a car.

First time use / battery charge

The Nuvi units are short on battery life and therefore Garmin has given you a connector other then USB to power your unit while in a car. You need to carry that. It's just a design flaw. If you try to rely on the battery of your Garmin Nuvi, you have less than 2 hours even on a full charge. And carrying the USB adapter which plugs into the cigarette lighter socket won't allow your unit to run while charging. so you need to take the adapter charger bracket that comes with the unit if you need it for longer trips.

"unit turns on and off with the ignition switch, sometimes."

There is something wrong with your power cord or the connection to the cigarette lighter. Your unit should turn on and off with the ignition switch. If the unit is on and doesn't turn off with the ignition switch then your unit is running on battery. If your unit doesn't turn on with the ignition switch then the unit is not getting power from the cigarette lighter.
