MacBook Air sound/disappeared

From one day to the next the sound has disappeared.  I have checked the sound preferences and the mute box is ticked but I cannot un-tick it.  Under the sound preferences there is are no output devices found and no input devices found.  I cannot understand. I tried to make software update, plug and unplug headphone, no way.

This is a widespread hardware issue with the MacBook Air. You are not alone. See:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1736638&tstart=15
Some users report that replacing the Audio Board Flex Cable corrects the problem, but others report that the correction is only temporary.
If your machine is still under warranty, I would get it back to an Apple repair facility immediately. If it is not, you will still need to get it to a repair facility, but bring along the above URL and suggest that Apple treat it as a warranty extension issue.

No sound device in macbook air

Apple menu (top left) System Preferences > Sound > Output tab select the Internal Speakers
check your output volume and make sure the Mute checkbox is unchecked.
Plugin a pair of headphones. If you still have no sound. The sound board needs to be replaced, which is attached to the logic board. Meaning the whole logic board needs to be replaced.

How can I unmute MacBook Air?

Open System Preferences/Sound/Input. Look at the bottom of that window where it says:
Output Volume. There's a slider, then to the right a Mute button. Make sure that is not checked.

Go to your system preference panel in the dock... click on the sound control icon. Look down at the bottom of the dialog box... there is a "MUTE" check box....make sure it's unchecked....
Also press the 'fn' key at the bottom left of your keyboard while pressing the f5 key... to raise volume...
let me know if that solves the silence!
