Question about Canon PowerShot S3 IS Digital Camera

1 Answer

I have a Canon Powershot S3IS and I recently purchased a 2x telephoto lens. When I use the telephoto lens and try to extend the distance as far as it will go, the camera shuts off and says lens error please restart camera. Do you have any idea why it is doing this?

Did you tell the camera that you are using an external/additional lens? You have to specify it somewhere in the menu, the camera gives you some options (the lens model numbers) and you need to match it with your lens' model number.

Lens error says restart camera how to restart canon S3iS camera

Hello

Unfortunately a "lens error" message is not something that you will be able to fix. This error indicates a system failure and requires the camera to be sent in for servicing and repair.

I have seen a add for Opteka 650-2600mm High Definition Telephoto Lens for Canon but if we see a price of the lens it seems to be too low. I am consuffed whether the lens is good or it is just a marketing...

It is an inexpensive lens. It's actually a 650-1300mm lens with a 2x tele-extender to take it out to 2600mm. It's slow, manual focus, without any form of image stabilization, and with no electronics so setting the exposure is also manual. It won't be as sharp as a Canon 600mm lens, for example, but it is a lot cheaper. Also bear in mind that the 2x tele-extender will cost an additional 2 stops of exposure, so with it attached the the already slow lens becomes a very slow lens, giving a very dark view through the viewfinder.

I have a vivitar telephoto lens for the camera, but not sure how to mount the lens. If I take the outer ring off, I dont know if the lens that came with the camera is suppose to also unscrew, or if there...

None of these Canon Powershot cameras have a lens which will remove.
The ring is only for a special kind of add on lens for either wide angle or telephoto, which will only fit this camera or possibly a few other models.

Never try to unscrew the lens, you will ruin the lens permanently.

Problem with digital concepts teleconverter

The SX1 has an amazing 20X optical zoom. The teleconverter will allow to get pictures if the camera zoom is not fully on 20X. It means that you can't get a full 40X zoom images, but a 30X maybe. I don't why canon has this problem.

Lens compatability

Apparently, the extender is designed to work only with specific lenses. B&H Camera has a chart available here showing which lenses it is compatible with. Note that even if the extender will fit on a specific lens, autofocus capability is not always possible. All the lenses listed are professional series ("L") lenses, and I don't see any 75-300 or 18-200 listed.

Purchase Zoom Lenses

Canon currently makes super Telephoto lenses from 300mm to 800mm and a number of zoom Telephoto lenses from 28-300 to 100-400. You can also special order a 1200mm lens from Canon at a cost of $99k! (There are only about 20 such lenses made so far.)

You can also get a 1.4 or 2x teleconverter to further increase the power of a telephoto lens. However, the cameras are unable to auto-focus when the minimum f-stop exceeds f/8, which can happen when you use one (or both) of the teleconverters on these longer lenses, so you have to manually focus the lens.

You can also get telephoto lenses from other manufacturers such as Tamron and Sigma that are built to work with Canon cameras. However, the Canon lenses are generally regarded as the best quality.

I have a canon ixus 70. When I use the zoom facility the pictures become blurred. WHY

Believe it to be a camera fault. Reason: zoom feature makes the lens extend for telephoto work, therefore, the autofocus feature should be working at any distance you set the lens for and your shots should be clear. Could be an autofocus problem or the lens and CCD are misaligned at the telephoto position. Have the camera checked by a qualified repairperson. Get an estimate first. You may want to ask this question at the Canon website also.
