The clutch is screwed on. you will need a small punch and hammer to loosen it to get the clutch off.

How can the starter cord be repaired/replaced on a DR Trimmer/Mower with a 6.5 OHV Briggs-Stratton engine.


Replacement cord kits are available in home improvement stores. If the screen cover is pop riveted on you'll need to get replacement pop rivets and a tool to install them. Otherwise, remove the bolts holding it in place and remove the screen. Unwind the broken cord, paying attention as to the direction of the wind. Replace the cord and attach it to the one-way clutch. Don't forget to put the new cord thru the hole in the screen before attaching it to the clutch. Now wind the clutch so the spring starts to pull the cord into the clutch. Pull on the cord to see if it's operating correctly. Once you're satisfied, go ahead and reinstall the screen on the engine.

If you are going to be repairing B&S air cooled engines, may I suggest that you make a handy tool for repairing the pull cord starter. To access the pull cord assembly, remove the blower housing to expose the backside of the pull starter. All of the B&S pull start engines have a starter clutch that secures the flywheel to the crankshaft. These clutches go bad after a while. Go to a local repair shop and ask if you can have an old B&S starter clutch. Take it apart and keep the spindle. Have someone weld a T bar handle to the spindle. You will use this to reload the spring in the recoil starter, winding backwards to load the spring. Use a C clamp to hold it in place after loading the spring. Insert the new nylon pull rope through the grommet and out through the hole in the rope spool. Tie a figure 8 knot in the end of the new rope. Slowly release the C clamp to allow the spool to rewind, loading itself with new pull cord. You need about +/- 20 inches of pull cord. Replace the rubber handle on the pull cord and you are ready to mount to blower housing back on the engine. I hope this helps. PS. The starter cord jammed on recoiling, after attempting got release it the recoil spring rewound, now the cord and spring are interlocked. I'm looking to strip the recoil mechanism but I believe I


Its an easy opperation to undertake if you know how. Take note of where everything goes during the stripping down of the recoil assembly. Use eye protection when trying to recoil the rewind spring, they have a tendency to jump back out at you while coiling them back in. easiest way is to start by putting the hooked end into the plastic housing and work your way inwards coiling it back in. Then place the starter cord roller in on top, adding the one or two black sliders, the washer and the spring clip to hold it all in place.

According with the repairt guide, check this porocedure to REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
  1. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery.

  1. On some early models with cruise control, you may have to remove the battery.
  2. Also on some models with cruise control, remove the actuator cover and disconnect the wiring harness. Remove the three bolts and then lift out the cruise control actuator. Remove the bracket from beneath the actuator and put aside.
  3. Peel the rubber boot away and remove the nut and disconnect the negative battery cable from the magnetic switch terminal on the starter. Disconnect the electrical connector also located on the magnetic switch.
  4. Support the starter by hand and remove the two mounting bolts.
  5. Remove the starter from the transaxle.
To install:
  1. Place the starter motor in the transaxle and support by hand.
  2. Install the two mounting bolts and tighten them to 29-31 ft. lbs. (39-42 Nm).
  3. Connect the connector to the magnetic switch. Place the battery cable on the switch terminal and install the nut. Tighten the nut and position the rubber boot over the cable.
  4. Using the ignition switch, "bump" the starter over a few times and check for proper operation.

SOLENOID OR RELAY REPLACEMENT
The starter solenoid (magnetic switch) is an integral part of the starter assembly.
  1. Remove the starter from the car. Remove the heat insulator from the starter assembly, if equipped.
  2. Disconnect the wire lead from the magnetic switch terminal.
  3. Remove the two long, through bolts holding the field frame to the magnetic switch. Pull out the field frame with the armature from the magnetic switch.
  4. On 1.0 kW starters, remove the felt seal. On 1.4 kW starters, remove the O-ring.
  5. To remove the starter housing from the magnetic switch assembly:
    1. On 1.0 kW starters, remove the two screws and the starter housing with the idler gear and clutch assembly.
    2. On 1.4 kW units, remove the two screws and the starter housing with the pinion gear, idler and clutch assembly.
To install:
  1. If necessary, install the gears and clutch assembly to the starter housing. Apply grease to the gear and clutch assemblies and:
    1. On 1.0 kW starters, place the clutch assembly, idler gear and bearing in the starter housing.
    2. On 1.4 kW starters, place the clutch assembly, idler gear, bearing and pinion gear in the starter housing.

  2. Insert the spring into the clutch shaft hole and place the starter housing onto the magnetic switch. Install the two screws.
  3. On 1.0 kW units, install the felt seal on the armature shaft. On 1.4 kW units, install the O-ring on the field frame.
  4. Install the field frame with the armature onto the magnetic switch assembly and install the two through bolts.
NOTE There is a protrusion or tab on each part; make sure you line them up correctly.
  1. Connect the wire to the terminal on the magnetic switch. Install the heat insulator, if equipped.
  2. Reinstall the starter on the vehicle. Check starter system for proper operation.

Make one with starter cord or rope:
I suggest a length of starter cord or nylon rope be used instead of the piston stop (retain 6" ± so you can remove it). Make sure the piston is near the top of the cylinder before feeding the cord or it can fall through the exhaust port and damage the piston as it rises. HTH

Start Pull cord replacement on John Deere s1400


Take the 4 bolts/screws loose that hold the shaft onto the weed-eater body, You will see the clutch drum, you need a long T20 TORX driver to loosen the screw in the center of the drum shaft. The screw probably won't come all the way out, so just pull the drum off as you loosen it.

Next you will see 3 flat clutch discs.

You may need to remove the spark plug and stuff some starter rope in the combustion chamber to keep the shaft from turning.

Unscrew these one at a time with a pair of large slip joint pliers. Be careful not to bend them and note which way they face. They unscrew clockwise I believe.

Once you have these out of the way, continue taking apart the plastic housing to gain access to the starter rope assembly. There is a spring under the rope reel, so remove the screw holding the reel in place and carefully remove the rope reel and spring.

Replace the rope, put the reel back in place and make sure the sping egages the little tab. Then wind it a few turns until there is moderate tension on the spring.

Feed the rope through the body and tie it to the T-handle. Replace the hold down screw that keeps the rope reel in place.

Test the pull tension before reassembly. It should retract the rope fully without too much tension and should not be loose. Lubricate the rope reel where it rubs against the housing with some light grade oil or lithium grease.

If everything functions, put it back together in reverse order.

Remove the rope from the combustion chamber and make sure there is no debris in it. Install the spark plug. You should be ready to go.

Weed Eater PE550 - How do you change the spring that operates the cord pull. Cord not rewinding. Spring broken


Lay the unit on it's side, carborater down. Removed the 3 screws holding hold the gear assembly housing. Hold the clutch assembly inside a cloth with a wrench and remove the nut. Left from the starter cup as a stack and set aside. There is a starter retaining ring on the shaft. Pull this with a long nose plyers. If it spings free, it is easy to loose. Then left out the starter pully. The starter spring is under the pully. Remove it with a sharp pointed tool. A broken one is crusted in rust and will be snapped off inside the coil.

  4. If equipped with 4WD, install the front driveshaft.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.

  1. If necessary, install the gears and clutch assembly to the starter housing. Apply grease to the gear and clutch assemblies and place the clutch assembly, idler gear, bearing and pinion gear (1.6 kW) in the starter housing.
  2. Insert the spring into the clutch shaft hole and place the starter housing onto the magnetic switch. Install the two screws.
  3. Install the field frame with the armature onto the magnetic switch assembly and install the two through bolts. Tighten the bolts on the 1.4 kW to 52 inch lbs. (6 Nm) and on the 1.6 kW to 82 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
There is a protrusion or tab on each part; make sure you line them up correctly during assembly.
  1. Connect the wire to the terminal on the magnetic switch and tighten the nut to 52 inch lbs. (6 Nm). Install the heat insulator, if equipped.
  2. Reinstall the starter on the vehicle. Check starter system for proper operation.
