What do the three lights to the left of the quick launch bottons mean. It looks like a lock, anoth erlock and a battery shape. The one that looks like a battery shape blinks from time to time. I do not the use battery, I keep it plugged into an outlet. I'm having othe problems and think that maybe the intermittant blinking of the battery shaped light may be a hint to what's wrong.

This model doesn't officially have Windows 8 support. That would be why the quick launch doesn't work. Also quick launch I believe for HP is only supported for Win 8 Pro and Enterprise versions, not the consumer version.
I think the remote control is part of HP's Quick Launch product and the
driver can be found under Mouse/Touchpad and Input Devices. Look for
the Quick Launch or Quick Play which controls the Media devices such as
the DvD/CD, etc.
In the excerpt below they reference the remote
as the external easy access keyboard (I think). I got this off my
daughter's HP which has a remote.
This package contains software that enables customers to program the
Quick Launch Buttons on the keyboard and the external Easy Access
Buttons Keyboard for the supported notebook models and operating
systems. This application enables menu control of various buttons such
as volume, internal/external display, and mute on/off.
Depends on the laptop model but normally but it could be one of three lights. First, the disc utility light (tells you when your hard drive is in use, either reading or writing data). This light normally looks like a square, 2 or 3 circles stacked on each other or a small cylinder. The next type of light is could be is your wifi light. This light tell you whether the computer wifi is one or off or if it is transmitting data. Normally this like looks like an antenna with semi circles coming off the top of it like radio waves. Lastly, it could be your battery light showing you whether the laptop is charging, or charged. Normally this light is shaped like a battery and may have a little lightning bolt in the middle of it. Without know exactly what the light looks like, it is hard to say but these are the three most common lights.

From what i can remember with HP laptops there are two ribbon cables that rup up the left hand side of the laptop which both look the same. One to the power button the other to the LED's and hot keys on the keyboard bezel (plastic strip that runs above the keyboard)
You may have accidentally used the wrong cable in the wrong slot. Try reversing the cable. power on and see what happens. You can also try to switch ends to see if that helps.
Are you holding down the 'function' button than pressing the windows key? The function button is the one with 'Fn" on it. Its probally a different colour than the letters on the keys.
I hope this helps, if not than let me know. Please rate my answer.
