Question about Dometic Refrigerators

1 Answer

I have two dometic refrigs next to each other in the same compartment on my houseboat in Lake Powell (where there are no repair people) - the RM 2862 works great on AC or gas. My problem - the RM 3863 ! I will start it on gas, hear the gas ignite and then in a few minutes "check" comes on. If I start it with AC from the generator and run it on AC for maybe 15 minutes, then shut off AC, power switches to "gas' and the refrig will work great for maybe 24 hours, then " check " comes on and the refrig is off. Same thing then - won't restart on gas but the AC will start it and then will run for 24 hours on gas. The frig is 6 years old and is used maybe 20 hours a year. Could this be fixed with just re-placing a " board " or so, which I could do>

My houseboat is a 1985 model. I bought these frigs from Camping World and installed them myself.. The problem frig I'm asking about ran great for the first 3 years. I am aware of the "recall" and had the repairs done last spring. This problem I am asking about has been going on for a year but can't find anyone to help me now. Can you?

So appreciate your quick replys. Yes, I have felt it is a control problem. I do have the schematic in the "Installation and Operation Instructions " book that came with the frig. What do you mean "have I done the preliminaries" ? The boat-frig are at Lake Powell, 170 miles away from my home, and I will be going over there Fri 10/9 for the weekend. Do you want to come or can you tell me what to do to get you more info ?

Your refrigerator is in a 'recall' Go here:
This is way you have problems...

http://www.azrvinc.com/Dometic%20Recall.asp

These refrigerators were installed in certain recreational vehicles as original equipment and sold as aftermarket equipment. A fatigue crack may develop in the boiler tube which may release a sufficient amount of pressurized coolant solution into an area where an ignition source (gas flame) is present. This release of coolant under certain conditions could ignite and result in a fire.

There are potentially 926877 units affected
.
The vehicle manufacturers will notify owners of recreational vehicles that had the refrigerators installed as original equipment and Dometic will notify the owners of the aftermarket refrigerators. Dometic will install a secondary burner housing free of charge. Owners may contact Dometic at 888-446-5157

Yes I can help you but I need more info. It sounds like a compressor control problem. Is there any schematic on the unit? The problem does not seem to be isolated to gas or electric, so I think it's just a general control problem. Is there a control board in it? Have you done the preliminary checks? Terminal connections, visual?

Give everything a good and through looking at, that is a visual inspection. You find many problems right there. Then, tug on all the wires, wiggle stuff, just mess with stuff and see what you see...

If you have to, take a close up photo of the schematic and make sure you can read it, then send that to me...

I have a dometic RM 2862 refrigerator and smelled ammonia and then heated up but no signs of leaks, is the cooling unit bad?

Is it still working? If you can smell ammonia, I would say that there is a very small leak. Over time, the fridge will lose its efficiency and take longer and longer to cool down. Eventually, it wont cool at all once all the gas has escaped. From what I remember of Dometic fridges, is that they used to supply exchange refrigeration units. You remove the entire refrigeration system and swap it for a new or rebuilt system. It worked out a lot cheaper than buying a new fridge.

I have a Dometic Rm 2862 2-way about five years old.

Ammonia smell means cooling unit is done. Just double check on dometic site in case of any recalls that may apply. (dometicusa.com)

Sounds like the evaporator fan is not working. Check to see if you can hear the fan running in the freezer. If not running, try removing the panel in the back of the inside freezer and manually spin the fan blade . This sometimes works.
