The microwave will not heat anymore...it still runs, but it doesn't heat. It is only 4 years old and $700+ to replace...wondering if getting it repaired would be worth it

Might want to check to see if you have your paper work for that unit. Most parts that can be bad are not very expensive. The one part that it most likely is , the magnetron is expensive, however GE has a 5yr warranty on that part.

So far I have found that if the rest works you have a blown diode,or sometimes the resistor as well, these are cheap and allmost universal, if you or a mate can use a resistance(ohm) meter you can find the one (there are 2) and change it.

See this article: http://www.repairfaq.org/sam/micfaq.htm#micnhono

Under the heading "No heat but otherwise normal operation" you might beable to fix the first three items listed if you have access to a continuity tester. You would probably need a pro for other causes under this heading.

See also fuses and thermal switches in other parts of the article. __________________

We have a 10 year old GE microwave model JE 1860 and it turns on bit is loud and doesn't 't heat up wondering if it is worth repair or should we just replace it??

Carol, where I live the parts for what could be the possible problem and the labor cost for the repair would probably equal about 2/3 to 3/4 of the cost of a new microwave. Most dealers that I deal with in my area tell me that the average life span of a microwave is 5-7 years. Considering the age and what it might cost it might be better to invest in a new microwave. Hope this helps.

Problem with the GE Spacemaker (JVM1640SJ) Microwave Oven GE Spacemaker XL1800 won't heat food anymore....It worked this morning, now won't heat. What should I do?

GE Will replace the magnetron for 9 years! Mine is a 2004 model with a one year warrently according to manual. HOWEVER they did say the magnatron was covered for nine years: call 888-239-6832. When I called they said thats all they get calls for and would send out in 3-5 days. NO CHARGE. I had to ask if there was coverage longer than a year on major parts and that's when they offered the info and I eventually was transferred to the right office. Saved $120 bucks on parts alone.

Whirlpool MH3184XP Microwave Turns On, Heats, but sounds like fans not working. 4 years old, fans worked fine until they seem not as loud anymore. The magnetron is working fine as it heats (did the 1 cup...

Suggest you pull the plug out, remove outer cover and place a cup of water into the micro. Set power to minimum then switch on and take note if the fan works or not. If not, switch off immediately and have it replaced(magnatron will burn out if left to run without fan.)

It doesn't heat anymore. About 5 years old only.

Check the door safety switch. When they go bad, they oven doesn't know if the door is closed or not. Find them inside on the side opposite the hinge. They go bad because we (read "you and me" open the door with the oven running and that cooks the contacts on these little switches.

It isn't heating anymore. Two years old.

HI. in most cases, this will lead to a failed Heating device(magnetron tube). It would be wise to check the Magnetron cutoff fuse to be sure of its integrity. if the fuse is blown, simply replace it. if the fuse continues to show continuity, replace the magnetron.

(((The fuse is located inside the unit along side the magnetron)))

Ge spacesaver microwave ...it is 5 years old and stopped heating

I have an over the oven microwave that blew a magnetron after 4 years. Could be the same thing. It was out of warranty for the free labor, so I took it apart (I'm kind of a geek) and found out the magnetron was gone. Shortening the story: I bought a new magnetron from an online place and replaced it and it works fine. If you have someone replace your magnetron, see if you can get it for free-they have a long warranty on the magnetron ($150 part) and at 5 years, you probably qualify. Rich

GE JVM1870 Runs, but won't heat up

Our GE jvm1870 is now over 4 yrs old, and had been working fine-- until recently when using, didn't heat anymore & also started making a crazy sound.

Am no electrician, so I called GE to help. Needed a new magnetron & some diode. Part was under a 10 yr warranty- the total cost for service call + labor was under $200. Not great, but beats buying a new microwave ($400-700) and having to install it.
