Open Question

Scanner doesn't work but printer does. Old computer was struck by lightning. Printer was okay. Using another computer and the printer works but don't know how to get the scanner or fax operating.

This issue could be occurring due to number of reasons, it could be due to the corrupt All in one software or it could be due to the scanner hardware as well, since you have confirmed that the printer prints fine you are absolutely right that the communication between the printer and the computer is good, however to know where the problem lies and to fix the issue disconnect the printer form the computer and try to make a copy form the printer itself, if the printer is able to make a copy then the printer scanner device is working absolutely fine, however if the printer scanner is unable to make a copy check if there is any error message displayed on the printer LCD, if you find any error please keep me posted so that I can send you the resolution for the relevant error, alternately you can download and install the firmware form the Dell’s support site to fix the issue, here is the link form which you can download and install the firmware: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R98804&SystemID=PRN_ALL_A962&servicetag=&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=7348&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=1&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=40&fileid=128061
Please make sure that you do not turn off the computer or the printer while the firmware is being downloaded or installed.
After the firmware is downloaded and installed then restart the printer and the computer.
Check if the issue is resolved, if the issue still persists then you will have to replace the printer as there is nothing much that can be done to fix the issue as the scanner hardware is failed.
If the printer is able to make a copy form the printer then try these steps:
Download and install the updated driver for the Dell’s support site, however before you download and reinstall the drivers uninstall the previous version of the driver before you install the latest version, here is how you can uninstall the previous driver.

  1. Insert the Disk labeled Dell All in one center disk in the CD ROM.
  2. Click Next and select Uninstall form the list.
  3. Click on continue to uninstall the software.
  4. After the All in one software is uninstalled disconnect the printer form the computer and the restart the system.
  5. Download the latest driver form the Dell’s support site and then install it.

Install

The Self-Extractor window appears.
2.Click OK or Continue.
The Self-Extracting Driver Installation window appears and prompts to
extract files to C:\DELL\DRIVERS\R92834.
3.Leave all of the default settings and click Unzip or OK. If the
directory doesn't exist, you'll be prompted to create one. Click Yes. A
Self Extractor window appears and indicates C:\DELL\DRIVERS\R92834 files were
extracted.
4.Click OK.
Follow the on-screen installation instructions in the window.

Do you get the same line when you use the adf for other purposes?

If so, check the scanner glass just before the platen for something like white-out on it. Clean both the scanner glass and platen glass with Windex.

That is a common problem on all ADF scanners.

I hate to say it, but you'd be much better off buying a new printer. Prices are so low these days, you'll spend much less on a brand new one then parts and labor, even at a discount shop.
You can get a new all-in-one printer for as low as $50 from tigerdirect.

Hello,

If it is your first time using your printer, then you need to install the driver for it to work.

If you have used your printer without any problem before then, there are two possible reasons why your printer/scanner is having that issue:

1. Connection error
2. Driver problem

First thing's first. Restart your computer and your printer. there are times that computers and printers just need a restart for it to work. Yes, it's strange but it's how things work with machines. They need rebooting to work smoothly.


If rebooting your computer and printer won't fix the problem. Here are the things that you can do.

1. Connection error:
.
a. Turn off your printer and turn it back on. Try scanning, if no go.. proceed to step b.

b. Unplug your printer from your computer and unplug it's power cord and press and hold the printer's power button to 5-8 seconds to completely drain the power. Plug it back in to the wall outlet leaving the connection between your computer and the printer still unplugged. wait until your printer completely turns on. Plug it to your computer and do the scanning process.

If all steps above don't work, then you need to check the driver.

Uinstall the driver of your computer by going to the control panel. After uinstalling it, then reinstall it by using the dvd that came with your printer. Follow the on-screen instructions and try scanning. It should work.

HP 2520hc scanner drivers


Which driver set did you install? Did you install the HP basic drivers, the full software or the Windows XP built-in driver? The Windows OS driver usually only is the printer driver.

If you connected the USB cable before installing the HP software, you will get the OS drivers. Disconnect the USB cable and then uninstall the printer driver. (Start > Control Panel > Printers and Devices. Then right click on the printer and select Remove Device.)

Install the HP software. If you want to launch a scan from the all-in-one's front panel button, install the full software.

Next open the scan software on your computer. (This is the HP Solutions Center for most models if you use the full software.) Attempt to launch a scan from the software. Adjust the resolution and other settings as needed. Then use those settings to adjust the destinations for the front panel buttons in the software. (Settings > Scan Settings > Button Settings)

If this doesn't work, try a different USB cable, a different USB port on your computer and a direct connection (if you are using a USB hub). Scanners require bi-directional communication with the computer and may fail when the printer works due to a minor cable issue. If you have the printer connected to a router or similar device to turn it into a network printer, again the scanner will not work. Again the direct connection to the computer is needed.

If you are still having trouble, can you use the all-in-one's copy function? If not, do you have any error messages? If the scanner mechanism isn't moving, the unit probably needs service. (This model doesn't have a scanner lock to protect the mechanism in transit.)

I installed a printer on my PC and the scanner does not work. Should i install the scanner aswell?


Do you have the combo printer that comes with scanner and printer in one machine? If you do, then one installation should work the device as the computer will recognize it as one. If that's what you have, and the scanner still doesn't work, return the machine and ask for a new one.
If you have separate scanner and printer machines, then you should have two installation discs as each should have its own. You will need to install the scanner if this is the case.

Since lightning struck the house the CM1312 is dead. I looked inside and the main fuses are okay. Any suggestions?

HP Photosmart C4180 scanner


Unfortunately Vista has problems with many printers. (Or maybe I should say many printers have trouble with Vista.)

HP has a work around that allows you to scan without using the Scan button. Go to:

They give you 2 options to scan using programs on your system

My printer doesn`t react

Recent lightning strike in area, lost two tv's two dvd players, phone service, modem. power strip that computer and printer were using was affected. computer appears okay. printer not so good. HPPhotosmart...


Usually the instructions say to NOT have the USB cable plugged in BEFORE the software has been installed... Maybe you had it connected before??? If so, uninstall and unplug the USB cable and reinstall per directions.

I have an old computer with Windows ME operating system, will my new LexMark printer/scanner/copier work with it?


You will need to check the Lexmark website and check the model of the printer/scanner that you're using if it has any available drivers for Windows 98/ME. If it does then you shouldn't have any problems installing and using your new printer on an old machine.

Printer problem


There is some problem with your integraed scanner in office all in one. But your printer should work fine.

 

But you may not be able to sned or receive faxes as it needs the scanner to be functional.

 

If you can lubricate the rails of the scanner assembly, it become moving again.

 

Otherwise get it serviced.
