This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

Enter your model number and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

Please see the following description of how to take the cabinet off of a basic top load Kenmore.

Hello i have a whilpool washing machine top loader model no: 3RLSQ8000JQ2 and it will not empty or spin

Hello Pete,

Very likely the reason your washer is not draining/spinning is going to be a broken lid switch. On the right side of the rim under the lid on the underside the lid switch is mounted too. On the lid itself is the strike the depresses that switch. First thing to do is check and see if that strike is broken,if it is place and and close the lid slowly and listen for a click when the lid switch when the lid is mostly closed,do it a few times if necessary. If ya do not hear that clicvk or even if ya can see that the switch is physically broke and disattached from the rim of the lid the switch is indeed bad and would need to be replaced.The part number for that lid switch is 3949247 it could be purchased at your local appliance parts store or online at;

This youtub video will show ya step by step how to disassamble the washer and replace that lid switch,

If ya check the lid switch and for some reason it turns out to be ok and their is something else causing the trouble with your washer please let me know and i wll figure out what else it may be

Thanks for using, have a wonderful day,

When the machine is switched on,water starts leaking.

Good luck with your machine! Ours has the same problem, and the motherboard fried out twice, the seal broke once, the door lock broke , oh and the GFI switch samsung sent out to prevent an electrical short and fire hazard stopped working after 1 month of use; and we've replaced that GFI twice ourselves and Samsung won't do anything to help us or exchange this lemon machine

Washing machine stops mid-cycle, water doesn't drain

Sounds like you have a bad lid switch, or the plastic plunger on the lid that engages the lid switch is broke. if the plunger is broke, it is cheap, and only 2 screws to remove and put new one on. if that is not broke, check the lid switch. This model is a lid switch, and lid lock in one. You can test it before replacing it if you have a meter. you need to hinge the lid up to check and replace the lid switch. use a putty knife, on each side between the top and top of the front panel. slide the putty knife in one side, it will hit a bracket if your in the right spot. press in, and lift on that side of the top. do the same on other side, just don't let go of the first side or it will latch again. then swing the top back, the back side is on hinges. the lid switch is on the right side attached to the top. unplug washer, remove the 2 wires on the switch and check continuity. there should be continuity, or "open" when the lid is closed, and no continuity, or "closed" when you open the lid. if it is "closed" even when lid is closed, replace the lid switch. let me know if you have any further questions, shane.

Kenmore washer

Yes I fixed my washer problem.
The washer was stopping before it would drain and spin. I would raise the lid and then close it back and it would start back up. So we figured the lid switch was broke.

Before you do anything you "unplug" the washer!
You have to pop the ends off the back panel with the buttons on it. Then you unscrew the 2 screws at the bottom of the panel and raise it up. Then you remove the brass clips that are holding the lid on. Then you move the whole washing machine cabinet out. My husband replaced the lid switch. Then we had to figure out how to get the cabinet back on right. That took some time but we did it. Then you repeat everything you did to take it off to put it back together.

The washer is working fine now.

Lid switch is broke and need to replace.

1. Unplug machine

2. Remove two screws in back of angled top part connecting it to base, lift back up 4-6" and shift top toward front 1/2" so tabs holding front of top to machine base can disconnect.
