Question about IBM ThinkPad T20 2647 Notebook
Hi, I have a thinkpad T20 that I am repairing. presently, it will not boot up. powers up ok.. has memory, hard drive and cpu.... but nothing happens beyond that... ie screen stays black. you can hear the fan running... I also replaced the cmos battery. that's about it. no beeps with all dimm slots filled. with dimm slots empty.. get 3 beeps twice then 1 short beep.
The ThinkPad T20 overcharge the capacitors and this is why do not start even when the lights are on.
To fix the problem, disconnect the ac adapter and hold the on / off button for about 60 seconds. After that, reconnect5 the ac adapter and turn on the computer.

The laptop is not booting up at all it sounds like - I have seen a lot of t20 series laptops fail this way.
First try an external monitor to make sure it is not an LCD issue.
Then try a replacement CPU. If that doesnt do it the motherboard is probably bad. I have one here right now doing the same thing about 1/2 the time.
replacement mainboards seem to be cheap these days though - here is a bottom half of the machine for sale on ebay:

Try plugging it into an external monitor and see if it shows up,or without monitor, hold in the fn key and press the F key that had a picture of a monitor on it.

TRY TO GO OLD SCHOOL AND USE A WIN 98 SART DISK OR TRY TAPPING F8 ALOT DURING START UP AND SELECT STEP BY STEP START

I would say the hard drive is failing. But need to run a diagnostic on it to be sure.
If you would like to know where to get the ibm / hitachi hard drive diagostic let me know. It's free for download and you can get a bootable ISO image to burn onto cd. Allowing you to boot from cd in order to test the drive.
As far as replacing, you should be good with a 60gb or 80gb. Did it orginally have a 20gb in it? I would say for most people, 60-80 is way more than enough. Unless you have a ton of music or pictures.
