Sounds like the motor is running, the belt could likely be broken and be the culprit, this is if the motor is turning for sure after you start the dryer

Dyrer on comes on when button is press, once you let go it turns off. we have to keep the button pressed in at all times in order for it to work.any ideas???

place a jumper wire , between the 2 wires that attach to the start button, if this fixes the problem replace the switch , leaving it on all the time will burn it out since its a momentary switch , if that doesn't fix the problem, then check the door safety switches, and the control thermostats

The dyrer will not turn on. The dryer makes a humming noise but will not turn on.

Open the dryer door and slowly rotate the dryer drum in a counterclockwise (CCW) direction. Rotate the drum 2-3 revolutions and then shut the door and see if it will start. If it continues to just hum and not start could indicate a voltage issue, motor issue or a friction issue. Open the door again and locate the door switch plunger in the upper or lower corner on the hinge side of the drum opening. Hold the plunger in while someone begins rotating the drum counterclockwise. While turning the drum counter clockwise and holding the door switch plunger inwards press the start button. If it starts, there is likely a friction problem or motor problem. Also, check the blower on the dryer to see if a article of clothing may have gotten stuck there and preventing the motor from running.

Ge electric dryer. suddenly stopped working. Will

Hi Stv,
There isn't really major problem, but a problem.
You will need to unplugged your unit and take it apart. Are you handy?
If and when the unit is apart look at the motor and the fan exhaust and see if there is a coin or screw is jamming the motor or the fan
while you are in there you may want to clean it up,
That should be the problrm

My dyrer doesn't turn on. It just stop working.

Check the following to address this issue.

No power to the dryer
Make sure there's power getting to the dryer. Check for a tripped circuit breaker or a blown fuse. Check the wall socket for power with a voltmeter or by plugging something else in.

Door switch / Door switch actuator lever
The dryer would not start with a broken door switch. Replace the door switch if found defective.

Most dryers have a door switch actuator lever - when you close a dryer door, it presses against the lever, which actuates the door switch. If the lever is broken, the switch would not activate and the dryer would not start. Replace the lever, if broken.

Note: Door switch actuator lever usually comes with the door switch assembly and it is recommended to get the whole assembly since there is almost no price difference between the door switch assembly and just the lever. Check your model for more details.

Thermal fuse
Most dryers have a thermal fuse, which burns out when the dryer overheats, in which case the dryer will either not run at all or stop heating. The fuse is usually located on the vent duct, inside the dryer. A blown fuse will show no continuity when measured with a meter. Before replacing the fuse, make sure the blower wheel is not broken or clogged, and there is nothing blocking the venting.

Note: It is recommended by most dryer manufacturers to replace a hi-limit thermostat when replacing a thermal fuse.

Timer
Replace if defective (note: uncommon problem).

Humming noise, runs and stops thru out drying process.

You have a motor that has a thermal overload built into it. This is for the dryer's protection. My best guess is to replace the motor. But before you do all that, make sure the wiring is good from the receptacle to the controls in the back of the dryer. It could not have a good connection thus causing this noise.

Problem with my GE dryer

  • turn your circuit breaker off then back on. sometimes the only one side of the dual 220v breaker will trip leaving you with a non functioning machine thats seems to have electricity going to it.
  • another thing to check is the door switch.
