Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

Does it cost more to have 2 start capacitors on ac We had a A/C Guy come and he added another capacitor to the A/C unit then it went out again. So now I have 2 that are hooked up and one just hanging. But my power bill went from $400.00 to over $700.00. I think what he did is causing my power bill to spike. I am not sure of the make.

A start capacitor is in use for only a split second if it's functioning correctly. What they do in a nut shell is give the motor (or compressor) an extra push to get it started. You also should have a motor run capacitor - don't have to have a start one. some times start capacitors fix the problem long term, sometimes they don't work at all or only a few times. Sounds like it's time for a new compressor or more.

Coleman ac compressor quit working

The black plastic capacitor is the compressor start capacitor, it is only in the circuit until the compressor gets up to speed. The black box is the start relay, it stays closed until the compressor gets up to speed the opens taking the start capacitor out of the circuit. The wires should go from it to the small metal round capacitor and the black box.
You can Ohm out the start relay, it should be closed between Terminals 1 and 2 and the coil is from 2 to 5. You can also check the 2 capacitors, you need a Volt Ohm Meter that has a capacitor testing scale. The microFarads should be on the capacitors you will need to cut the bleed resistor on the start capacitor before testing it.

Was running ac. Now blower won't come on for ac or heat. Error code 24 is displayed. Please advise. Would a blown fuse at ac unit cause blower to stop all together

It could be your capacitor. I had a fan capacitor go out on one of my 3 units last year and it cost close to $300 for an AC company to come out and fix it. I watched them fix it and it's something that you can do yourself if you know what you're doing and are careful to hook it up right. I have three AC units and another capacitor went out this year and I found a kit with detailed instructions with pictures and phone support at hvacrepairkits.com. It saved me over $200 on the capacitor replacement.

Keeps flashing ES, not cooling. Not even one year old.

The 2 most common issues are a freon leak or the outside unit fan start capacitor goes out. It's more likely a capacitor issue. They fail regularly, especially when it's as hot as it's been this year. A capacitor only costs a few bucks. The condenser motor may tell you what MFD of capacitor to use. What you could do is 1. kill the power to the condenser 2. open up the electrical panel on the side 3. trace the motor wires to locate the capacitor. As you're tracing the wire, you may run across a low pressure sensor on the refrigerant line also. This would be a good start to diagnose where the problem is. If you're really going to be doing this, you should invest in a good multimeter.

AC fan running backwards

Check to see if it has some wires for reversing the direction. Some have four wires you can switch around to change the direction. If not make sure the capacitor is connected to the start connection and not the run connection. The wires for reversing the direction should be orange and yellow or purple and yellow and will be shorter than the rest. Hope this helps. Let me know what you find.

Goodman AC unit - fan starting outside but not getting cool air.

set the thermostat at alow temp normaly after few minute the compressor and the fan will start , if are stying off check control signal is energising the compressor relay if ok check the relay coil; if all are ok ncheck the capacitor then check if the air is still hot means the charge of freon is less and also before charging check the leak
