Whisperflo Pump 1.5 Hp problem

When I came home from work I noticed the pump was not running, when I shut the power off and back on all it does is hum and the pump does nothing. Any Ideas, time for a new pump? Its about 5years old.

The pump is probably fine the motor is the problem. If it just hums it might just be the capacitor on top of the motor. Don't know how long it sat there not able to start. Was the motor extremely hot ? If it got too hot may have damaged the motor. Motor is replaceable without replacing the pump head.

You would need to use a meter to make certain you are getting 230 volts all the way to the terminals on the back of the motor. If you are, you most likely have a defective motor, or at the least a blown or open motor start capacitor on the motor. All of these motors also have a thermal switch that shut off the motor when it gets to hot, then it will cool down, you will hear a click, and it will run again for a short period of time. This is caused by a broken cooling fan inside the motor, or dirt or leaves blocking the vent holes on the bottom of the motor.

3/4 Whisperflo will not prime

once you figure out why it's having trouble priming, you can reduce the discharge side with a valve to adjust the flow to what you need. You can always always reduce the discharge side but never the suction side.

My Whisperflo Pool Pump is making a racket. Is

Stick a large screw driver on the motor in the area of the bearings and on the pump housing ... stick the handle to your ear (notice I said to your ear ... not IN your ear) Listen. Often you can determine the source of the noise in this manner.

My money is on the impeller. You will need to replace the seals when you disassemble the pump motor from the pump housing. I found a dime in the impeller recently made a racket until the impeller wore down in that area.

Pool pump starts & stops on its own outside of programmed run

There are several potential problems:
  • freeze protection circuit causing pump to start - could be a bad outside air temperature sensor.
  • It is possible the new relay is bad.
  • There could be a short in the control wires to the relay
  • old programming shadow stuck in memory (not likely since you changed the boards)
Yes, the starting and stopping can harm your pump.
