Re: my pilot light won't stay lit

Its possible you have a bad flame sensor or thermocouple. this is the least costly repair. in fact thermocouple usually can be purchased at local hardware stores and replaced easily. if that doesnt fix it then you have a bad pilot valve and will need to have a certified gas technician fix it for you..

How to light pilot light

Your gas valve has 3 positions. "OFF", "PILOT" and "ON". Turn it to "PILOT" and push it down hard. Hold it 2-4 seconds and light the pilot assembly. Keep holding it for 10-15 seconds and slowly let it up. The pilot should stay lit.

Hello, i lite the pillot and and start up fire so its working and some time during the day the pillot goes out?

If you have a standing pilot that wont stay lit and you have to keep relighting it, it can only be a couple of things that will do this.
1. Try tighting the thermocouple at the gas valve. (this is a thin copper line that goes from the gas valve and goes to the pilot light.)
2. Make sure that the tip of the thermocouple is in the pilot light flame.
3. Make sure that the thermocouple is clean.

if you have done these and it still doesnt stay lit, buy a new thermocouple.

Pilot light wont stay lit, even when on high

Pilot lights are supposed to stay on when the flames are burning. If they didn't the flames would go out, because the pilot flame against the Thermocouple keeps the pilot burning. It's a safety feature.

The pilot light will stay lit. Go to turn on heater and stays on briefly and goes out The heater wont stay lit.

If the fan comes on and blows out the pilot light then you need a new furnace because that's the sign of a crack in the heat exchanger. Need a little better description. Do the burners light then the fan come`s on and then it goes out completely?

Im calling for heat from the thermastat and control panel, the boiler light and and the fan is running, but no matter how many times i keep re trying the pilot and burner will not commence, is there...

I would check to make sure control on gas valve is in on position and pilot is lit if you have a standing pilot. If you have a spark or hot surface ignitor make sure they are trying to lit pilot. If you have standing pilot model and pilot lit is not on. Turn control on gas valve to off, wait five mins. then turn to pilot. Depress botton and try to light pilot. If it lights hold down for a couple of mins. then release.. If pilot stays lit turn control to on. If thermostat is calling for heat this should bring main burner on. If pilot does not stay lit then replace thermocouple. Hope this helps. Thanks

Why would the pilot light ignite then turn off?

If it is a true "pilot" light, it needs to be held down long enough to generate the milivolts needed to prove to the gas valve that he is ready to open, other wise the gas valve would open, not igniting, thus causing a "gas leak". Turn the t-stat OFF, turn gas valve to pilot, push down on pilot knob, light pilot and hold for 2 minutes. After 2 mins let go, and if pilot stays lit, turn gas valve to ON, and turn the stat to heat and turn it up to desired temp. If pilot does not stay lit after doing above, try sanding thermo couple( the thing the flame is sitting in) or just spend the $15 bucks and replace therm couple.

Turn the gas valve to pilot. Push knob down & hold. While holding, light pilot & keep knob held down for one minute. Let go of knob & see if pilot stays lit. then turn knob to on position. Boiler should then turn on.

I have a Rheem gas furnace, model # RGAA-100C and need help lighting the pilot. The instructions on the metal plate tell me to set the valve to off, then to pilot, push the valve down until lit, and then...

Hi, follow what I say and it is very easy. The knob that says off, on, and pilot, is where you need to start. You don't want to turn it off now, as its been off for awhile now. Turn the knob slowly pushing down on it until you fill it go down. The knob will go down believe me. When this happens, keep holding it down as this is what starts the gas to the pilot which is back under the burner, under it. Just take a flash light and you can follow the aluminum tubing back and where it stops is where you light it with something long with a match in it or a small rolled up paper. Keep the knob down the whole time you are lighting it. When it lights, keep the knob pushed down for about another minute. Then slowly release the knob and the pilot should stay on. Once you have it on, turn the knob to on, not off. If you turn it the wrong way, it will go off and you will need to start over again. Once it stays on by itself, turn your thermostat up for heat and the burner will light and come on. Just remember that the pilot where you light it is where the tubing goes back under it, as the pilot gas goes through it. You will need a light. Look at the knob with a good light and it will tell you which way to turn it. In the pilot position, the knob will press down to let the pilot gas in, and you can reach back and light it. Then turn knob on. Pilot should stay light. Turn on thermostat and it will fire up. Let me know how it goes. You may have to try a couple of times.

Pilot on logs won't stay lit

Hold pilot button longer. if this doesn't work your Thermopile has gone bad and will not generate enough Millivolts to keep gas valve pilot open. A new thermopile will generate 750 millivolts. It cost less than $20 dollars but is difficult to replace. You should call a certified technician. They will charge you about $100.00
