Is this a new Maxtor external drive? It came with a CD. Run the utility.

If there is no data on it that you want to save, you can also blow away the partition and format it:
Right-click [My Computer]
[Manage]
[Disk Management]
Find your external Maxtor Disk inthe list and / or graph
Right-click on the disk and select either "Format" or "Delete Partition"
(try format first) Use "NTFS quick format"

If you delete the partition, then "Create Partition" and then format.
You can assign a drive letter or accept whatever it assignes (probably Drive D)
*done*

I have an IMAC and our Maxtor 500G external hard drive is not being detected when we connect. It was previously connected to a windows PC, how do we connect this to the mac to access files. Currently when...

Connect it to a PC. If it still does not work, then it's time to disassemble the enclosure, remove the disk-drive, purchase a compatible replacement disk-drive, install it, to "reconstitute" your external storage device.

Take the model-number and serial-number from the old disk-drive, and check Maxtor's web-site, to see if the warranty is still valid.
If so, then Maxtor will replace the disk-drive, at no cost to you.

Hi there i hav ea maxtor onetouch 4 mini 120 gb.

Remove the hard drive from the Maxtor case, purchase an USB hard drive adapter case, and install the hard drive inside this case. Then you can connect this to the computer's USB port and if the hard drive is OK then this computer will detect it as an external USB hard drive, then you can open the folders and files and back them up.

Can't open Maxtor one touch 4 mini

If the external hard disks is plugged to a USB port and is not detected anymore, try uninstalling the USB Root Hub devices in the device manager. They will automatically be reinstalled on reboot and that can help fix detection issues.

But did you look in the Disk Management module of Windows to see if the disk is there? Right-click My Computer and select Manage.

Computer is not detecting my maxtor onetouch III

the hard disk interface could be broken, open the hard disk case and use it as an internal hard disk as a slave in a computer to save your data

Cannot get external hard drive to work

- Make sure that the hard drive (HD) is properly connected to the computer.

- Try connecting it to a different computer to make sure that the HD is the problem.

- Check the Disk Management in your computer to see if the HD could still be detected. Once detected, reformat the HD and it should work again.

To check the Disk Management:

NOTE: Make sure that the external HD is connected and turned ON.

1. Right-click "My Computer" (XP) or "Computer" icon (Vista)
2. Select Manage and click on "Disk Management".
3. From the Disk Management, you will see a drive letters
4. Write down all the drive letters and then disconnect the Maxtor HD from the computer.
5. If there's a drive letter that disappears, then that is your Maxtor HD.
6. Reconnect the Maxtor HD and reformat it. You may right-click the drive letter and there's an option to format the HD.

If you're hearing a clicking sound while the HD is turned on, mostly, it's already defective.

Have a great day!

External Hardisk Maxtor 4 One Touch not detected

Have you tried different USB cables with the drive? If the drive is self powered (no ext power supply) which I think that one is, then it needs a really good cable to draw the 5 volts from the USB port. If you have tried a known working cable, then it could be the USB controller or the disk itself. You can buy the USB box on eBay really cheap and move the drive over.

Installing the external drive

In XP and Vista no need to install.
They will detect automatically.
To know, goto Windows explorer.
Find drive letter other than your local drive.
Usually called "removable disk".

Maxtor III 600 gb will not mount

What Operating system are you using ?

I'll assume your using windows.

Try going to disk management
it may not have any partitions

you can get into the disk management by pressing start --> Control Panel ---> Administrative Tools --> Computer Management --> Disk Management.

Once your in Disk Management you should see the 600gb

After you find it right click and either format / import foreign disk

(This applies to internal hard drive only)
If Hard drive is not listed you may have to set jumpers correctly or check bios to make sure hard drive is detected
