You should find the right specs and replacement batteries. I believe that you have an old style battery that has a memory function. These don't.

The blinking asterik means low battery. Could be that your replacement batteries aren't full power.
What is really sounds like is a static charge problem though. If you don't have anything stored in memory that you are worried about losing, try taking the batteries out for a full 24 hours. This will let the capacitor drain and performs a static discharge. After 24 hours put working batteries back in.
