Assuming that you are using original Canon cartridges or a brand of Compatibles that you have used before.

If print results are blurred, colors are faded or not printed correctly, the pint head nozzles are probably clogged.

Follow the procedure below to print the nozzle check pattern, check the print head nozzle condition, then clean the Print Head. You may have to do this 2 or 3 times.

If printed ruled lines are misaligned or print results are otherwise unsatisfactory, aligning the Print Head may improve print quality.

Caution Do not rinse or wipe the Print Head and ink tanks. This can cause trouble with the Print Head and ink
tanks.

Note Before performing maintenance
Open the Top Cover and make sure that all lamps on the ink tanks are lit red.
If not, see Checking the Ink Status and take an appropriate action.
Increasing the print quality in the printer driver settings may improve the print result.

Canon Cleaning the Print Head Deeply

If print quality does not improve by standard cleaning of the Print Head, clean the Print Head deeply. Cleaning the Print Head deeply consumes more ink than standard cleaning of the Print Head, so clean the Print Head deeply only when necessary.

    1. Make sure that the power is turned on.

    2. Open the printer properties dialog box.

    3. Clean the Print Head deeply.

    (1) Click the Maintenance tab.

    (2) Click Deep Cleaning.

    (3) Select the ink group to clean deeply.

When cleaning the nozzles of black ink tanks: Select Black if there are missing lines in PGBK of the nozzle

check pattern, or Color if there are white streaks in BK of the nozzle check pattern. For details on the nozzle check pattern.

    (4) Click Execute.

Note Clicking Initial Check Items displays the items to be checked before cleaning the Print Head

    deeply.

    (5) Confirm the displayed message and click OK.

The printer starts cleaning the Print Head deeply when the Power lamp starts flashing green.

Do not perform any other operations until the printer completes the deep cleaning of the Print Head. This takes about 2 minutes.

    4. Print the nozzle check pattern to check the print head condition.

    Note

If the problem is not resolved, open the Top Cover to confirm that the ink is remaining, turn off

the printer, then clean the Print Head deeply again after 24 hours.

If this does not solve the problem, the Print Head may be damaged.

How do you fix the colour printing grey instead of black

Do you need to change out your black color cartridge? Check your ink levels to make sure that you have plenty of each color. Also, check the settings for your printer (perhaps under "properties") and make sure that you haven't clicked on "grey scale". I hope that this helps.

If colours are faded I would recommend running several cleaning/deep cleaning cycles to try and pull through the colours. It is difficult to say without seeing the print quality, but it sounds like an issue with a partially blocked printhead within the printer.
The printing in blue would suggest to me that one of the blacks in your printer is blocked. Were all 5 colours present on the nozzle check?

Inkjet printers need to be used frequently to prevent inkdrying out in the print head nozzles.
If the print head cleaning maintenance routine does not clear the blockages, then print head needs replacing, but it may be expensive.
It may be more cost effective to buy a later model and better printer thanreplace the print head.

I know it sounds stupid but do you have the old black cartridge, if you do put it back and see if it is printing even if the quality is poor and faded. If it is then possibly there is a contact bad, try swittching the black cartridge for one of the other colour ones, but put a colour in to the black space but don't put the black into one of the colour spaces. If the colour one is working in the black space then it's basically a dud cartridge and bring it back to where ever you got it from. Hope it works for you - Pat

Print text is grey not black

Have you tried cleaning the laser? Open the front door, on the R/H side there is a green lever, pull this forwards. Next on the R/H side of the printer pull off the small panel, inside is a green handle. Pull this in & out fully a couple of times to clean the laser lens. Hopefully your prints will now be back to normal. If not then there could be a problem with eitherthe black developer or the PCU. Try printing some horizontal coloured bars to see if all of the colours are affected or just the black.

Grey & Black Printing on everything

Hi,
it appears that the printhead has a problem. try cleaning the printhead, via software. usually in printer prefs. also try running a few test pages. to see if you have any colours at all. if it,s only printing in grey scale. i.e grey-black. check the colour cartridges ink has,nt run out or blocked the nozzles.
Hope this helps Mike@Compurepair.

Won't print black

I found a solution to the Black printing problem :)
Under Printing Preferences: Set your Media Type to Photo Paper Pro.
We used edible ink cartridges and printed onto icing sugar paper. Same old... Just one day it refused to print black. In order to continue our small business, I degraded the color until I printed gray and not black.

Tonight, I browsed for the problem and came across this :)

Hope it helps you too
