Question about Fishman V200 Professional Violin Pickup Microphone

1 Answer

I testing out a Strawberry Blonde II amp with my violin using a Fishman V200 and Fishman GII preamp. I can't seem to get a good sound -- its picking up alot of bow noise and the sound is harsh and raspy. Any suggestions for amp settings, pickup placement on bridge etc.

I have found a good combination for my wife's violin. We are using an Autolycus pickup (from New Zeeland about $70... search Google) and the X2 wireless transmitter/receiver pair. The X2 has the extremely high impedance required by the piezo pickups. This pickup clips onto the top surface of the violin with a small plastic clip through the F hole on the treble side. It is easily moved between instruments.

The Autolycus is sold online and they have a demo there.

Of all the pickups we tried, this one "sounds like a violin" and many people have complemented us on the way the violin sounds. A sound man said of the setup, this is the first violin pickup and wireless he has not had to EQ to sound right.

I used an oscilloscope to verify the output waveform from the pickup matched the resulting output of the X2 receiver.

Note: I had to make my own cable for the pickup which has an RCA female and the original X2 cable supplied had a 1/4 inch male.

I got the X2 system through online ordering from MF. (They recentely had a special on them at $220. The wireless is really nice... no long cable to load down the piezo.

Note: The "stereo" 1/8 inch connector of the X2 system uses the RING as the signal. Bothe the sleeve and the tip are ground.

What's your problem?I have two Fishman amps. The older Loudbox 100 single channel and a Loudbox mini. I am trying to find the service manual for the older fishman as I have a fault with it and the

Fishman iis you best bet http://www.fishman.com

You can download the user manuals, they do have a block diagram, but the scan is pretty bad.

It may end up the person looking at it is going to need to rely upon their general knowledge.

My own suggestion is to pull the chassis out so you can work on it while powering it. And then work your way through the amp with either a signal source plugged in at the input, and with high impedance headphones with test lead ends, go through each audio stage carefully. until the fault is isolated. If it is not caps or the rectifiers in the power supply, faulty ground connections to chassis or faceplate, a faulty 4558 is most probable. The headphone approach is the fastest way to address this last one. If a different series of preamp chip is used, a good source for the IC datasheets in general is Digikey http://www.digikey.com and parts too.

Gray hair is resistant to accept color.....You might try to find one of 2 products: " Zotos Porosity Equalizer" from Sally's or any beauty supply store. Also, Clairol has a new formulation called "Gray Solution", where there is a cream added to gray hair prior to adding color. This is for next time you plan to color.
In the meantime, you may want to purchase Roux Fanci-Full Color Styling Mousse in either #19 or #18 to tone down the red tones from your local beauty supply or online.Good Luck

It is possiblle that the sudden pulse from the pickup due to tapping is saturating the input of your amplifier, and that is what actually kills the signal. Try this into a different amp as a test. Once you do the test I can offer some suggestions to try.

Fishman Prefix Plus preamp on my acoustic guitar picks up the unwound strings well but the wound strings are barely audible

You could try boosting the bass and reducing the highs on the EQ setting, however there MAY be a probllem with the pickup, not the preamp.

do you have active or passive pick-ups? if active, pop in a new 9volt battery, that might do it, it worked for me. if that doesnt work, go to guitar center or somewhere and get a heavier insulated, better constructed cord. sonds like you might be completing the ground from interference if its not your battery. hope this helps

The piezo pickups for violins REQUIRE a high impedance input preamp.

The measured impedance of My wife's violin is on the order of 2 megohms.

It sounds like you are having cable connection problems. If you don't have a preamp right at the vilin, then use a VERY short high impedance instrument cable.

Most of the Focusrite mic preamps I looked at had input impedance around 5K ohms which is unsuitable for the piezo pickups.

Here we use an Autolycus pickup on an acoustical vilin and an X2 wireless system. The transmiter has a very high input impedance and the resulting system sounds like a violin.

Some amps themselves DO have a high input impedance, but many designed for guitars do not. Long cables, especially low impedance ones, load the piezo pickup with capacitance which clobbers the high frequency response.

I bought a pick up for my violin. But when I plug it in and play. I get a rubbing sound coming through the speakers, like the pick up is picking up the bow strokes rather than just the notes... Its sounds...

Yes, and it will pickup "handling noise" as well.

A hint I can offer is to try a mute. One of the bent wire ones with weights that clips over the strings in back of the bridge..

I have found a perfect match for my wife's violin. We use an Autolycus pickup and an X2 wireless link. NOTE: the piezo pickups require a VERY high impedance input amplifier. You MUST use a very short cord or all the highs get wiped out.

We got the Autolycus from the source in New Zeeland (about $70). The fellow has a website with a sound clip. Search Google for Autolycus violin and you should find it. Do listen to the sound clip. The little piezo clips on the top where the sound post is with a plastic clip that reaches through the treble side F hole.

I had to make my own cable for the X2 wireless as it has a TRS 1/8 connector and the signal is on the ring and the tip and sleeve are ground. The Autolycus comes with an RCA jack on a pigtail. The X2 has a very high impedance input at the transmitter which is ideal for the Autolycus pickup. We use a Berhinger ACX1000 acoustic amp. It actually sounds like a violin.

Use good quality strings is important. The X2 system is a digital transmission at near CD quality.

When I plug it into my amp there is a staticy

yes there probably is a dry jopint on the wiring or the jack input isnt tight enough also the battery connector could have a dry solder or looose connection I would go for it if the price is low and just spend a few bob to solder it or check the connections.Good Luck

Unit inoperative, one LED blip on battery install only.

Its possible that if you changed strings the saddle might have changed position in its slot. It has to sit uniformly on top of the piezo element in order to work properly. Try testing the pickup(piezo element) first before suspecting the preamp.
