Question about Poulan Pro 42CC 2 Cycle Chainsaw, 18"

1 Answer

I tried to start my older Poulan Chain saw a day after I had been using it. I find it almost impossible to pull the starter cord...there is too much resistance. If I take out the plug and pull the cord everything works fine. When I put the plug back in and aloow the compression to be there the problem in pulling the cord occurs. Any ideas of what I can check...I can't find a service centre in my area.

Did you remember to mix oil with the fuel before you put in the tank?

Remove the spark plug wire and the spark plug. Remove the muffler. Shine a light through the spark plug hole and inspect the cylinder through the hole where the muffler was. Is it smooth and shiny? Use the starter to move the piston up and down slowly. Is it smooth or does it appear scratched and gouged?

I suspect parts of your piston are adhered to the cylinder wall. If that is true it will probably cost more to repair it than to replace it.

You needn't take it to a poulan repair center. Most Stihl outlets employ good mechanics and can repair any saw. HTH

Shh... my Husqvarna gets serviced by a Stihl dealer... The Husqvarna dealer is actually closer to me. I feel better about the Stihl mechs.

The length of the Starter pull cord is 40"
It can be purchased at www.ereplacement parts.com

I have no affiliation with this site or company. They simply have great prices and also list exploded views of this saw and others.

I have a wild thing. the rope pull starter is very hard to pull. when i take the spark plug out it is easy to pull. the saw was not used for about 4 years until yesterday. it ran for about 45 minutes fine....

one piston ring has expanded now having no or a very fine gap increasing the compression ratio causing this to happen. When the spark plug is removed it is very easy to pull on the cord in any means. A inspection is due of this engine or a new chain saw is needed

Recoil starter

If the end of the cord won't hold a knot to keep it in the reel, try melting the very end of the cord with a match to form a small lump. If the cord is too short so that you are coming out to the end before getting a good run-up in the starter, replace the cord with a longer piece (obtainable from any servicing dealer). Buy the same diameter of cord. Hope this helps!

Hi i have a Poulan chain saw and it will not

well there are generalloy two issues with any motor. SPARK and FUEL

Remove the plug and hold it near the entry point of the plug hole so it earths to case. Pull starter cord and see if the plug has a stong spark.
the should also be some wetness on the plu indicating fuel is pumping. Place finger over the plu hole and pull cord avoiding any spark but check the amount of pressure in cylinder. The pressure should be stronmg enough to push your finger off the hole

Replace plug and open the air intake and spray some AEROSTART into air intake pull start cord. If this does not cause it to attempt a start, I would suspect the coil is fused and will need replacing

The cord to my Poulin chainsaw is sticking

To traxtor06
Your problem sounds like a broken starter spring. If the spring is broken it will slip allowing the tension to be released and not fully retract the rope.
