I have an old integrated amplifier and an old BSR EQ-3000 stereo frequency equalizer. i just bought a used bose 901 speaker set. how do i hook-up the bose 901 equalizer in this system?

It sounds like you may have only the 901 loudspeakers, and not also the companion 901 equalizer box. You must install the 901 equalizer properly--using the tape monitor loop of the G901 receiver. If you of not, the 901 loudspeakers will perform poorly.

If your system is equipped with a tape monitor loop, you can switch the EQ out of the circuit by disengaging the tape monitor switch. If the EQ is connected to the pre-out / main-in jumper, you would have to defeat the EQ before you hook up a conventional speaker. I don't believe the EQ has a defeat switch - you'd have to rig a bypass.

Once defeated, if you have a system equipped with a Speaker A / Speaker B selector, the smaller speakers could hook up to the second system. If that's not possible, speaker switches are available for reasonable money. It is very important, though, that the 901 EQ i defeated when using conventional loudspeakers.

If you are using the Bose Equalizer to optimize the sound of the 901s by going through either a tape loop or a pre-out/main-in loop, then the only way to do this without also equalizing the sound sent to the second set of speakers is to manufacture a "zone-2" output from the Luxman.
You'd probably need to split the send from the Luxman's pre-out before the EQ and send it to a second power amplifier for the second pair of speakers (if you want the Luxman's volume knob to control both speaker sets) or from a tape level output (if you wanted independent volume controls for the two speaker sets.
The whole EQ thing made 901s difficult to use on vintage equipment with only one "zone" audio outputs. Unless you want to use the Bose EQ on the second set, too, you can't do it satisfactorily without adding another stereo amplifier. But, go ahead and try it, you might find that you actually like the odd EQ that the 901s EQ gives to the second pair!
If it were my decision, I probably would not do it without a second amp, but it's all about what you like, my opinions really don't matter in your house, do they?

As far as I know, any equalizer will work. There is a guy on here that might know more about them, but I never had the Bose equalizer and I have Bose speakers for 35 years. The guy at the electronic store back then sold us a little equalizer at first, we graduated from that a long time ago, and now on the 3rd or 4th one. No problem, works great, sounds better than ever. Hope this helps.

There is no direct connection between the 901's and their Active Equalizer. It is designed to be inserted between the source and the DEDICATED amplifier driving the speakers. Typically, this would be in a Tape Monitor loop on a receiver.

Tape Rec/Out to EQ In; EQ Out to Tape Play/In on the receiver. If you have a tape deck(s), it(they) would go into the back of the Bose EQ as if it was the receiver and you would use the Tape and 1/2 buttons for selection.

Or,if you have access to any other point that doesn't use the Tape Monitor, like a Pre Out/Main In jumper set, place the Equalizer there. That way it's always in front of the speakers and doesn't take up the Tape Mon.

Flip in the Tape Monitor and leave it on or the speakers will not receive the essential ACTIVE Equalization they require for proper frequency response. DO NOT place non-901's onto any amp using the Active EQ.

Like any speakers, the 901's will attach to the speaker terminals in the conventional manner.

The Bose EQ connects to the tape out and tape in on the amplifier or reciever. If you were using these for a tape deck, you will then have to connect the tape deck to the tape in and out on the Bose EQ.

There's good news and bad news. The bad news is that a multichannel receiver with Bose 901's will only sound right in STEREO on stereo analog material. For one thing, the other speakers around the room are not designed to recieve its Active Equalization and for another, if you engage your Tape Monitor you will not be able to play digital sources. Tape Monitor is for analog stereo material only and on my receiver it disables any digital inputs.

The good news. I have a setup similar to what I think you're trying to do and it works great!

A separate stereo amp for the 901's was my solution. I run a Carver AV-406 (5-channel amp) for my 901's in Front, 2 Subwoofers and the Rear Surround channel, with the Active EQ between the receiver Front L&R Outputs and the 901's amp channels. My receiver controls everything and just drives the Center and Surround speakers. You could get by with just a stereo amp for the 901's. A Carver M-200 is a good efficient amplifier that would have you cooking just fine (2x100W).

Run the dbx and BSR in tandem with each through the tape monitor loop on the receiver but be advised you can only use them on analog source stero material. However, you can still employ the various DSP options to spread the sound around the room.

At my PC workstation across the room I have a stack of analog processors and sources including dbx 3bx-ds, dbx 120x-ds, BSR Spatial Enhancer, BBE 462 Sonic Maximizer, SS-525x EQ, Carver C-9, dbx-224x, JVC cassette deck, Dual 1249 Turntable running through a Garrard MRM-101 Preamp, Pioneer PDR-509 CD Recorder and the Media Center PC stereo analog channels all running through a dbx 400x Program Route Selector (a godsend) which is attached to my ONE TAPE MONITOR on my Pioneer VSX-36TX Receiver. Of course, I have some of my analog processors running in tandem, too, since the 224x only has three processor and three tape loops.

For listening/recording anything 2-channel analog I engage the stack through the Tape Monitor. For everything else I turn the Tape Monitor off. The nice thing about the stack being separate is that I can doodle with recording and use headphones while the TV/DVD/Blu-Ray do something else.

I contacted the Customer support folks at Bose. Here is what they said: With a stereo receiver, the equalizer is run through the tape monitor section in the back of the receiver. The receiver's tape monitor output, left and right, runs to the amp input section of the equalizer, left and right. Then the amp output section of the equalizer, left and right, runs to the receiver's tape monitor input section. With a surround sound, home theater, type of receiver, the theory is the same, but the connection is through the preamp-out/ main amp-in section of the receiver. Not all receivers have this feature. Most, in fact, do not. Check the back of the receiver. There would be a connection made by two U-shaped clips. The plugs would be pulled out. Then connect from the preamp-out to the equalizer's amp input section; and from the equalizer's amp output section to the main amp-in. This effectively isolates the equalizer so that it is not affecting the other speakers in the system or the receiver's surround processing.
