Question about Hunter Ceiling Fan Control Switch

1 Answer

I just installed a hunter ceiling fan with a motor/dimmer control. The instructions said to set the speed at the highest setting before the instalation. Now that the job is complete (it works fine) how do I know that it is set to the highest setting? Thanks

Most have 3 speeds. If your remote works and you have the 3 fan speeds...Off,low,med,high....you have correctly installed.

I bought a Hunter fan Model 21778 that uses 2 incandescent candelabra lights. Before installing it I called Hunter support to see if it was okay to use a dimmer switch for these lights (I had already...

They're right, you don't want to control the whole thing with a single incandescent dimmer. First of all, the fan-speed and the lights will all be controlled by the same dimmer setting (dim low, low fan-speed - dim high, high fan-speed) - and the dimmer's not rated to control fans anyway which can result in exactly what they said.

There is a Skylark control, the S2-LFSQ- where half the knob controls the light, the other half controls the fan. The only problem you may (and most likely) have is that in order for that to work, between the electrical box for the dimmer and the fan, there needs to be seaparate wire run for the fan, and a separate wire run for the light so that the dimmer can individual control both.

If that's a problem, I recommend the MA-LFQM-, which includes a module that you install in the ceiling with the fan. The wall switch it comes with speaks to that module, and gives you independent control of the fan and light without having to install new wiring. I have one of those myself, I've installed one in one of my friend's houses, and they work pretty well and then you don't have to worry about what wires you've got in your wall.

Howdy,

Sounds like a good ol' American made Hunter Original to me. BEST and most powerful residential ceiling fan (high quality) ever made. The RPM spec is 200-160-50 for the respective speeds, moving 10,500 CFM on high speed. Most ceiling fans barely crack 5,000 CFM. they were built for Brute Force Air Movement and they really don't do well for small spaces. The best solution I have for you is if you have a Wall switch for this fan, to install a Hunter Original Wall control or remote control. http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=hunter+original+control&_sacat=See-All-Categories

Both controls will lower the Medium speed to about 100-110 rpm, which should be much more comfortable for you.

Because the Hunter Original (I know your fan is an American made unit by your wire colors) draws more current than other fans, the Original controls are the only controls that are designed to work with your fan. Other controls do not have the current capacity for the Original motor.

Also, are you aware your fan uses oil?

My hunter remote control ceiling fan doesn't go real fast. the highest speed is what a normal fan would do on medium. is there a fix?

if you have pull chain switches in addition to the remote control, your pull chain switch may be set to Medium, which would make the fan run on a maximum of medium speed.

Dual Dimmer / lights go off when fan not on high.

I'm not sure of the exact wire arrangement, but it appears as though a fan and light wire are mixed up, as thought the lights are feeding off the fan wire. Its possible that in the switch box or even in the fan box the output of your fan is tied to the lights so that when the fan is at it's highest output (maximum current), yours lights work properly and not at any other setting. Check wiring for errors.

Hunter ceiling fan-just installed -possible speed control problem

Sounds like the fan is defective. All internal wiring from the switch to the motor is factory installed. The fan has power going to it. Just to make sure, double check the wiring from the ceiling fixture to the fan.
Problem could be a faulty switch on the fan or faulty motor(bad winding for med. speed). Try reverse switch on the fan to operate the opposite direction and see if medium speed works. If medium does work in opposite direction, it pretty much points to a defective fan. In any case, unless you discover that the ceiling wires were reversed going into the fan, I'd say new fan to the returns dept.

Hunter ceiling fan is stuck on high speed

If it has a chain, buy a light dimmer switch so it will not have 1 speed anymore. If it has a remote control, buy a new remote control like your old one. Try different numbers on remote control.

Not working

How old is it? If it is more than a couple of years old, the motor windings for highest speed probably failed. They can not be repaired as cheaply as buying a new fan.

Quit working

first turn it off, then rotate the fan, half turn and try to turn if on again. if it start running again you have a faulty motor, and need to replace it. or if the problem continue, try replacing the switch in the wall.
