Hi,

This is a common problem to your brother printer model 2140. You need to turn off your printer and take out the toner. Look for the side and you will see a small hole on both sides. This is the sensor. You need to cover it with electrical tape.

Here is a detailed video on how to do it:

Good luck and hope this helps you.

Resetting Blinking Toner Light HL-2140

Here is the procedure for resetting the Toner flashing light on Brother HL-2140 (sources for other answers here and self testing - specific to HL-2140)
  • Open the front cover and leave open.
  • Turn the printer off.
  • Hold the "white button" while turning the printer on. (All panel lights should be on.)
  • Release the "white button".
  • Press the "white button" 2 times (Pause, wait for all lights to come on.)
  • Press the "white button" 5 times. (All lights to come on again, then go out.)
  • Cancel "maintenance driver" install, if prompted
  • Close cover.
  • Power cycle printer.

This will:
  • reset the toner light (stop blinking)
  • restore the printing darkness (when toner light flashes, printer prints lighter to save toner)
  • keeps the printed page counts and drum life info

Tip

Brother HL-2140 does not print even if toner is full

In the Brother HL-2140 printer, it shows the Toner led light is on. Even if there is plenty of toner on the cartridge. It just wont print anything after initiating a print job since the toner light is on.Here is a trick on what you need to do:

1. Turn off the Brother HL-2140 printer.
2. Open the front access door to take out the toner from the carriage.
3. Notice that on both sides of the toner, you will see a small hole which is most probably the sensor.
4. What you do is to cover the sensor holes with masking tape and color the tape with black marker. Or, you can also use an electrical tape to cover them.
5. Shake the toner so that the ink inside will redistribute evenly.
6. Return the toner to the carriage and try to initiate a print again.

That's it!

I HAVE HL 2140 PRINTER. INSTALLED NEW TONER BUT NOT PRINTING GETTING WITH DRUM ERROR

It is possible that the drum needs replacing.
Print a lifetime status page, and see if it says "drum 0%". If so, replace the drum and RESET the counters by using the reset button combination.

I have a new Hl 2140 and haven´t printed more than 100 copys but now the toner light is on and the printer refuses to print

Tip the toner cartridge from end to end to redistribute the toner. You will get more mileage out of it, if it is simply a low toner issue.

Brother 2140 toner light on, won't even try to print.

To get every bit of toner powder out of the cartridge, first remove the toner unit from the drum assembly. Second, find the little circular window on the right-side of the toner cartridge. Third, place a piece of black electrical tape over the clear window, cannot be clear tape. Fourth, re-install the toner cartridge into the drum assembly. Last, put the complete unit back into your printer. This worked for me.
