Re: burner mat

It is a fiberglass composite. it will not burn. its function is to soak up the kero coming into the burner pot for ignition. from the factory it is held in place by a refractory cement that tends to dry out after time and the edges of the mat curl up. I do repairs on my own monitor 441 and I use a 500 degree silicone adhesive that I got from the hardware store made by rutland stove cements.

The furnace turns on but cool air is blowing through the vents

When your furnace comes on have you checked to see what type of flame you have on the burners .They should have nice sharp arrow shape being mostly brite blue with a small amount of yellow, also flame should be setting on top of burners and not floating. If flame quality is not good then shut heater down and allow time for it to cool. Most burners can be easily removed by pushing forward on burner and lifting front end up slightly. Then move burner to clear orifice and remove. You can very lightly tap front end of burner on wood or some other material to loosen rust dirt or other material from top of burner. Lightly brush burner opening with soft wire brush and dump or blow out . Do one burner at a time replacing them as you go.
If I can be of more help to you please give me more information as to type and age of unit. Thank you

Hello again. I inherited a Laser 55 from a family member a few weeks ago. It had a few issues getting started but I was able to fix them and get the stove running thanks to redniten on this website. ...

As long as the gasket isn't broken you can reuse it but be careful becaust they are very easily broken.
I use a thin bladed screwdriver to remove the carbon and old glue, then vacuum up the mess. I sometimes use my sandblaster just for good measure.
If I'm not mistaken, there is a notch on the burner mat. Put the notch under the fuel inlet. I put a bead of the white adhesive all the way around the mat. I also put a drop in the middle. Press the mat down good and flat.
Hope this helps.

Low heat output. Older Laser 72. Does something

It's likely that the burner mat has came loose or it has a lot of carbon buildup in the burner. Look at the flame when the heater is on. It should be mostly blue with slight yellow tips. You might need to clean the fuel nozzle also. You can remove the fuel pipe where it connects to the burner and use a piece of wire or an allen wrench that will fit in the nozzle that goes into the burner to remove any carbon that may have built up. You can also clean the burner but don't destroy the mat in the bottom. You can find the owner's manual at and it will give you some more things to clean.

Laser 73 quits without warning - Joint gasket is always destroyed

I called a guy who used to work for Cliff's Envirotherm heating and asked him - he solved the problem over the phone. I did as he instructed and found the fire pot full of oil. He asked me if the stove had recently been serviced and when I said yes he told me to open it - check the firepot and call him back. He was correct the fire pot was full of oil. He informed me that if the burner mat isn't installed correctly the oil pools. He is coming out to my place tomorrow to correct the burner mat. Thank you for your return e-mail.

When the model 41 comeson it makes a woolf sound..also the window is sooted up..can you help?

If the burner mat is loose it will make that sound. A loose burner mat will also cause a soot problem. The soot can also be caused by too little air flow thru the burner.

I have a toyo laser 56 stove. It is starting to make a moaning noise. what shoud i do?

You need to have a new mat put in the bottom of the burner. When this mat lifts, sometimes the flame will cause a moaning noise with a large yellow flame. A new mat and maybe a burner ring will fix ya.

Toyo 55, igniter gets hardened build-up

Your Laser 55 burner mat has erroded away. The fuel is pooling someplace in the burner rather than spreading smoothly over the bottom. The stuff on the igniter may be hardened carbon from a poor flame. Bottom line is some burner work. A new mat, ring and cleaning the burner air holes is in order. Don't be surprised if the heat chamber is cracked beyond repair when you get it off. NOW for the bad news. The Laser 55 and 72 are older heaters. You will find just about all the electrical parts are going to be hard to find. They are no longer being made. Your 55 will be able to use the newer 56 blower, mat and burner ring. You will also be able to use the heat element off a 56 as well. If there is a problem with the fuel pump causing your poor flame you will be out of luck.

Good luck,

Tom Hawkins

Toyostove 72 won't go on high.

Replacing the burner ring (center piece?) will do wonders. When it's warped the stove won't work properly.

Toyostove Laser 56 (F type) making loud humming noise

the toyostove is basically a glorified monitor heater.  its components are a combustion blower, an air circulator fan, a flame pot, a flat wick or burner mat, a solenoid pump, an ignition element, double  walled intake, exhaust pipe.   the combustion blower is a glorified vacuum cleaner motor. it sucks in cool air and channels it to the combustion chamber along the sides (round cylinder) kero enters on the burner mat where it ignites. the solenoid pump keeps adding kero until the flame detector spots or heats up. air flow to the pot is regulated by a damper in the combustion air blower line. if the "O" ring in the damper is missing or hardened it will not regulate the air flow which is necessary for combustion.  replace this "O" ring should take care of your problem.
