With the power off, push the alarm button twice and the clock symbol should go out. This means the alarm is off. Also when the alarm is on and the power is off, you can push the function button to select nothing (buzzer), cd or radio.
Hope it helps, I am trying to find out how to reset the default volume from 17 which is way too loud

Random is truly a difficult problem to solve, if no pattern of failure can be detected. It sounds as though the alarm may be at fault. Is the alarm on and set to radio, CD, or beep? If radio, that could pinpoint the problem. If you have another, mechanical alarm, use it for a couple nights with the Bose Wave alarm off. If the Bose still acts up, then it isn't the alarm. Try unplugging the unit, waiting at least 30 seconds, and plugging it back in, which will cause you to need to reset the alarm. Alternately, remove the Bose cover and blow out dust. I find the Bose susceptible to dust as a cause of malfunction, which may point to the cause being the compact design of the unit. Good luck.
Select on the top AL1 or AL2 depending on which alarm you want to set until that is selected on the screen in the upper right corner. Then press the AL Set button twice. Turn the +/- knob until you have selected the right hour. Make sure you set AM or PM when scrolling through (PM has an indicator, AM does not). Press the AL set button again. Then scroll through with the +/- knob to choose the minutes. Then press the AL Set again to make that your alarm.
To set the Alarm 1 time - On the control panel, hold down ALARM SET and press TUNING up or down. The time display changes slowly at first, then more quickly. Release TUNING to stop. On the remote, press TIME. The ALARM indicator flashes. Press TUNING up or down. The time display changes slowly at first, then more quickly. Release TUNING to stop. Press TIME to return the display to the current time. To turn on the Alarm 1 function - Press ALARM MODE or ALARM in sequence to select the mode you want: tone, radio, both tone and radio, or off. For tone only, press until the indicator lights. For radio only, press until the indicator lights. For tone and radio, press until both indicators light. When the alarm goes off, the tone sounds. Press SLEEP/SNOOZE to turn the radio on. Press SLEEP/SNOOZE to pause the radio for 10 minutes. To turn off the Alarm 1 function - Press ALARM MODE or ALARM until the display shows no Alarm 1 mode indicators. To check the Alarm 1 setting - On the control panel, hold down ALARM SET to see the wakeup time. On the remote, press TIME to see the wakeup time. Press TIME again to return the display to current time. To wake to a preselected radio station with Alarm 1 - While holding ALARM SET, press the PRESET button for the station you want (change between AM and FM if needed).
Alarm can only be set or disabled when the power in "Standby" mode. The manual refers to it as power "off" mode, but the LCD display will still be readable only darker. To set the alarm push the Standby button until the sound stops and the LCD is dark. Then push the AL SET button (which doubles as the volume down button when the power is "on"). The hour should start flashing. Adjust the hour by using the two buttons at the bottom on the right side just above the IR sensor. Once you've set the hour, push the AL SET button again and similarly adjust the minutes until you have the right time that you want the alarm to go off. Now push the AL SOURCE button (which also doubles as the function button when the power is "on") to toggle between Radio, CD, iPod or buzzer for your alarm. After you're satisfied that the time is right and the source is right push the AL SET button again. The LCD should still be dark, but should also show the word "ALARM" in the upper left hand corner.
To set the unit so the alarm doesn't go off push the "Standby" button until the sound stops and the LCD is dark. Push the AL SET button until the hour is flashing. Don't bother to adjust the time, just push the AL SOURCE button until none of the following appear: CD, iPod, Radio, Buzzer. As you push the AL SOURCE button it will toggle between these options. Once you're sure none of them appear on the left of the display, click the AL SET button again. The LCD should still be dark, and you should not see the word "ALARM" in the upper left hand corner.
Hi There Briank36,
Most electronic devices now days rely on a small "battery" device inside to retain the memory settings that you set the system to.
This memory device can be a small battery or a capacitor, which is kept charged by the power supply during its on time.
When you turn the System off the memory device keeps the settings you like for the next time you turn the system on.
During this Off time the memory device is slowly discharged.
So as you say the system is now 5-6 years old so I suggest that the memory device needs to be replaced for a new one...
as it now cant kep the memory settings for as long as it used to...
I dont know the actual electronic configuration of your particular system but this would be the first item to replace..
try keeping the system off for over 2 weeks as this fully resets the whole systems memory (this does make you loose your radio preset's and any other tweeks you have done to it) but with a reset unit it should fix its self
