Question about Dell Dimension C521 PC Desktop

3 Answers

I have a Dell Dimension C521 PC. I want to use Skype and Lifecam VX 1000 but I cannot do so because a message comes up indicating that there is a fault with the sound card. The specifications for the PC are: Audio output: sound card headphones -line out- SPDIF Audio input microphone jack.1 X line in. The audio output seems to be working OK. What should I do to enable me to use Skype

The proposed solution did not work. You say go to microphone and select vx1000. When I go to microphone there is a drop down menu with only two options Sigma Tel Audio and Modem #0 Line record(emulated) There is no way I cna enter VX1000. SOrry about this.

To reply to your queries the operating system is XP

I use Labtec headset -Skype certified . It works OK on another PC

I put the black sound receiver into the socket at the front of the PC marked with the same symbol as on the black sound receiver. Likewise the pink microphone probe goes into the socket with the same symbol at the front of the PC. None of the sockets at the back of the PC are marked with either the microphone symbol or the sound receiver symbols.

Skype is set up with Sigma Tel Audio as you suggest.

I have also tried the LifeCam Vx-1000. It has has a USB port but the microphone part does not work.

When ever I do a test with either Skype or LifeCam, the same message comes up, namely, " the sound of this PC has a fault".

Is the specification of the PC namely

"Audio input microphone Jack.1 X line in

Audio output sound card headphones - line out -SPDIF"

    The audio outputworks.

I had similar issues with a Creative Audigy Card set in 2 DELL PCs running VISTA. I assume that you are a VISTA user. If so check to see if you have the following update on your system

KB970236

If so then:

1. Uninstall it as it prevents many peripherals including CD / DVD Drives, Sound Cards etc form working correctly.
2. Reboot the PC.
3. Download and reinstall the Sound Driver, Download it from Dell Support at the following link

http://search.euro.dell.com/results.aspx?c=uk&l=en&s=gen&cat=sup&k=Dimension+C521&rpp=12&p=1&subcat=dyd%2f3&rf=all&nk=f&sort=K&ira=False&~srd=False&ipsys=False&advsrch=False&~ck=anav

or directly from your sound card mfr support website.

4. Reboot the PC and all should be well.

5. If not then look at Start - Control Panel – Device manager – Sound etc to see if there are any issues regarding the sound card and driver. You may see an issue with the Webcam driver and if this is the case then you will need to uninstall the driver, reboot the PC and then reinstall the Webcam driver and all should be well. You may also have to uninstall Skype, reboot the PC and reinstall it. If the problems persist then contact the Sound Card mfr support for further advice.

Skype lists no minimum system requirements on their web site. From looking at Dell's website and your computer it should have everything needed. I need a little more information like what operating system you're using. I need to know what kind of speakers and microphone you're using and what color jack you have them plugged into on the back of the computer.

If you use headphones they should be plugged into the green jack and the microphone into the pink jack.

I need you to go to control panel and then choose sound and audio device properties. Go to the audio tab and see what sound recording device is set to.

You can also go to the Voice tab under sound and audio devices and click on the test hardware button. Do the audio test with your microphone to ensure that it is working properly.

Reading your other post it says you're trying to select VX 1000 in the drop down. I thought that was a video camera. I think you're suppose to select the Sigma sound device.

Sigma sound device is the driver for your microphone.

Duncan, Skype is easy to configure. Go to Tools->Options->Audio Settings. Here you will find Micro, Spkrs and Ring settings. All of them have options to select the hardware that you are using after properly installing them. Go to Microphone and select VX1000. Here also select Auto adjust mic settings. Then go to speakers and select whatever speakers you are using, whether your PC's or external or headphones or whatever. Again select auto adjust spkers settings. From below all this you can make a test call to skype and test your mic and speakers. And all will work to your satisfaction.

I just checked to verify that Microsoft does indeed offer a Vista compatible download for that cam. If you are serious about using the cam on the Vista machine, maybe you should try downloading the driver directly from Microsoft. It is entirely possible that the CD drive on your Vista machine is having problems reading the CD that came with the webcam and the download would be a direct install from the hard drive. Heck, it's worth a try, don't ya think.

Normal 0 How much memory do you have installed in your computer? It may need to be, increased, as this is likely to be the cause of your computer freezing, rebooting, times out, or shutting down.
Hope this is of some help. Bud
