SOURCE: ZOOMING PROBLEMS W/PowerShot SD850 IS

I sent my camera off to Canon and they repaired it under warranty for free. It took about a week for them to fix and cost me about $10 to ship with postage, insurance, etc. There was some issue with the optical zoom getting stuck. If your camera has this problem, I would recommend sending it into Canon for repair. Worse case, if it is not broken - you are only out shipping costs. I was lucky since by brother-in-law and I were able to compare camera's side by side and then I knew for certain that it wasn't a user setting.

Short answer no, all digital cameras have a reset in the menu and some have an external reset switch. Chances are your camera has an internal error.

SOURCE: My Canon PowerShot A85 no longer shows scene on

I have the same exact problem and called the Canon number 1-800-828-4040. They said it sounds like a manufacturing problem (just as mentioned above) and will send me a label to ship Camera (at their expense) to them to be checked out. Even thought I purchased this in Oct. 2005- they will repair it and send back to me ...if the image sensor is bad. If it isn't a manuf. problem they will let me know & give me the option of upgrading at a discount price. Thank goodness- this camera wasn't cheap and they were very helpful!! It doesn't hurt to call!! Karen from NC

My Canon A590 is stuck in 16x zoom (which it isn't supposed to have?). It powers on and off but it unresponsive to the other buttons. No more warranty.

Buy a new one. I am still trying to figure it out. If I pull on the lens a bit, when I restart, I get a normal view for one second and then zooms to 16x. It's a bummer, I love this camera. I used the macro a lot and noticed I was having trouble getting a clear focus before it did this.

THE DIGITAL ZOOM APPEARS NOT TO WORK. MAGNIFYING TO 16X CAUSES A BLURRY PIX, IN BOTH VIEWER AND PHOTO. DO NOT THINK THIS IS A RESULT OF ANY FUNCTION SELECTED.

Digital zoom magnifies the pixels to seem like you're getting closer to the subject but you're not. The larger the pixels, the worse the picture will look. You should never use the digital zoom (most people disable it). Only use the optical zoom.
