What operating system are you using to connect to this harddrive?

In XP you can go to the control panel and use the administrative tools section and access the computer computer management section and through there that will allow you to format it.

Also you can right click the drive through the my computer window and select format to format the drive as well.

Try to download the bundle of software from this link. This will be in ISO format probably. Write it on a CD /DVD. You can get your answer after booting with this CD. Choose proper options so that you can sure format your 1` TB HDD. I did it, or you can connect this HDD to another HDD as slave and can format this 1TB HDD.

Wrong format on drive

If you want to save your data first you'll need to back up the drive. Go to and download Discwizard and it's instructions. Follow the instructions and you'll be able to make the drive any size you want up to it's limit.

My Seagate Free Agent Go 120 GB did not back up MY Documents automatically. LI formatted it. Now I have Ceedo, but it doesn?t back up My Documents.

The disk you received with the harddrive from Seagate needs to be reinstalled so it can function properly to back-up your documents. Once you reinstall the software for the Seagate harddrive, besure to check the back-up settings to insure it will back-up your documents.
Hope this is of some help. Bud

Bios is able to see the Seagate drive, ST380011A,but not OS.

Do you have a low level boot disk or disk utilities (DOS or Windows recovery boot disk, Knoppix, etc)? The drive may need to be partition and set active so you can do a low level format. It is a basic ATA drive and should have no problems down to Windows 98. BIOS looks at the chipset for information first and not the partitions until the POST reaches its proper check point.

In this case the MOST effective way is to try some data recovery program to see if it can help rescue your data on your Seagate external.

How do I format a Seagate 500 to work on a Mac?

I bought one of the Seagate FreeAgent 500 devices yesterday and followed the instructions on the back of the box: plug it in; let the Mac recognize it; go to the Disk Utility function (found in Applications > Utilities); select the Erase tab and check the box to re-format the FreeAgent to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and choose a name for it.  Then proceed with the re-formatting.  It took only a few minutes but as soon as it was done, Time Machine (Leopard) kicked in and asked if I wanted it as my backup drive.  I said yes, and away it went.  Hope this helps.  By NewbieMacUserSept2007
