Ceiling fan will not spin, but I hear it

My ceiling fan will not spin, but I hear it humming, all the connections look fine, is this a bad part, any way to test it? It sounds like some sort of tension or pressure is holding it, but the fan motor/blades spins fine.

It is humming because it doesn't know the words!

I would suspect there may be a capacitor (sp) that is no longer working. Im not current (no pun intended) on that aspect of fans in general. If it worked once up on a time and doesn't now, that could be a dead start circuit (capacitor) or worn out brushes - I doubt your motor is a brush type motor, however.

Is it fan old enough that it could retire? Replacing may be a better option than repairing.

Let me know what happens.

It most likely has a faulty capacitor not allowing it to start. Remove the light kit or the cap where the light kit mounts, the speed and reversing switch will be in there along with a capacitor. You should be able to buy a replacement capacitor at most home improvement stores.

How do I check to see if the motor is bad on my ceiling fan?

You bought the wrong switch. Just because it looks the same on the outside doesn't mean it's the same on the inside(switch). I don't know if you have a bad motor but it is a cheap low-end fan only made for Home Depot!

If the oil is OK then check to see if it has a capacitor that might be going bad.

Hello, I replaced a light fixture on my existing Emerson ceiling fan. The light worked right away but the blades didn't turn. I could hear power going to the motor so I went back into the switch cup and...

Signs of a bad capacitor in a ceiling fan include:

  • Fan runs slowly or not at all on all speeds
  • Fan will not start but will spin if started by hand
  • Certain speeds are slow or do not work
  • The motor hums and turns freely by hand but will not spin

The capacitor is usually a black box inside the switch housing of the fan. If this box appears burnt or melted in any way, that is also the sign of a bad capacitor and it should be replaced.

Fan stopped Turning - Removed fan to check all the connections. All the connections were good. When you turn the fan on, you can hear a humming sound. If you take off the blades you can spin the motor and it will work, but will not turn on it's own.

I called Home Depot customer service. I had my receipt, so they gave me store credit for the full purchase. Since I have two fans, they wanted to know if I wanted to replace both fans. I told them one was still working fine, so I only replaced one. My problem was the transformer. You could see where it had overheated and melted.

I can hear soft sound when I turn on my electric fan but the fan is not circulating.

    Hi.

If the fan is humming, but is not spinning, check first that there is no mechanical problem or obstruction, then eventually replace the fan capacitor.

Hampton Bay Sussex ceiling fan motor turns on but fan won't turn

I don't agree with previous assessments. The motor may hum, but if it doesn't spin, it is locked up. Most probably a bearing (there are 2, 1 at each end of armature. probably a 6202Z. Very common bearing for ceiling fans of all makes. You can get them in most major metro areas at a bearing distibutor for 8 - 10 bucks or at ebay for $1.69 - $2.50 per bearing plus tax and including shipping. I just got 2 new ones for a total of $6.62 delivered in 3 days. Depend on how savvy you are with tools etc. It's not rocket science but I can understand that some people don't have a clue. No offense. I'm old and don't understand today's computers all that well. Ceilng fans are analog technology.

It sounds like the fan motor has blown out. Is this an old fan? The motors do burn out every 5-10 years, depending on the brand and quality of motor.
