This might b problem with your display or graphics card or Monitor............
Check first by connecting diffrent monitor if you have extra, or check it by using your friend's monitor
If it still shows diagonal line-----might be you need to replace your display card installed in motherboard or check by adding one new display card on PCI slot on motherboard if it fix or not

How can I get my laptop to start? I can't even get it to safe mode!

You will need to repair the Microsoft Windows installation using the orginal recovery disk that came with your notebook.

Also the laptop is overheating, clean the intake and exhaust vents.

Take care!

There are 6" wide gray bars on each side ot the TV

The grey bars signal that the source image is originally in 4:3 format - if you are using a box of some kind get in its menu and change the format from there to 16:9. The black bars appear when a 16:9 image is sent to a 4:3 format in Letterbox mode - leave it like that or the Pan and Scan mode will chop the sides.

Vertical lines in the picture on light background only

It sounds like you have Image burn in on your crt's. This happens when you watch programs in 4X3 mode. (The sides are blacked or grayed out and the picture is centered in the screen). The only way to fix this is to replace the crt's. I wish I had better news. Let me know if I can be of further assistance

Video channel has diagonal lines

check the connections from your video to your tv, sounds like you have a loose wire,

If not re-tune your tv , it might have lost the tuning a bit , but its probably a loose connection

Horizontal lines on playback screen

Someone here recommended on another post to put the lense cap on & videotape the blackness in a quiet room for 5-10 mins. I tried this as a last resort & it worked. When I played back the tape, no more skipping or gray lines. I had 4-5 SOLID gray lines with skipping video & audio in between on every tape I put in. I think the person who helped me solve this said that it was a result of the tape alignment going off. My camera is a Canon zr80 digital camcorder. (Called Canon, they had me reset it & then recommended sending it in).
