a few more details may be helpful but let me take a shot at it
if your computer and your router are not able to talk to each other (do not see each other) check a few things
1. you have a wireless router, you don't need to connect your computer to the router with the ethernet cables, as long as your network card (the adapter on your computer) is enabled and your router is configured to be a wireless access point, you should be able to see your router's name being broadcasted (if ssid is enabled) in your wireless networks.
2. if you are trying to connect to your router wired (through the ethernet cables), you can disable the wireless network card on your computer, and set the wired network card to receive ip and dns configuration automatically, if your router is set up to provide automatic configuration (default) you should be able to access the router and go on to internet wirely if your router is hooked up to a modem and your internet connection is up.
3. assuming you will be using your wires to connect to your access point (router), make sure your router has the mac address of your computer wired network card included if the router has mac address filtering enabled
read the documentation on your router
here and post back with more details of your problem and we'll follow up with you as needed
